Lanka Kand Verse 14
पूरब दिसि गिरिगुहा निवासी। परम प्रताप तेज बल रासी ॥ मत्त नाग तम कुंभ बिदारी। ससि केसरी गगन बन चारी ॥ बिथुरे नभ मुकुताहल तारा। निसि सुंदरी केर सिंगारा ॥ कह प्रभु ससि महुँ मेचकताई। कहहु काह निज निज मति भाई ॥ कह सुग़ीव सुनहु रघुराई। ससि महुँ प्रगट भूमि कै झाँई ॥ मारेउ राहु ससिहि कह कोई। उर महँ परी स्यामता सोई ॥ कोउ कह जब बिधि रति मुख कीन्हा। सार भाग ससि कर हरि लीन्हा ॥ छिद्र सो प्रगट इंदु उर माहीं। तेहि मग देखिअ नभ परिछाहीं ॥ प्रभु कह गरल बंधु ससि केरा। अति प्रिय निज उर दीन्ह बसेरा ॥ बिष संजुत कर निकर पसारी। जारत बिरहवंत नर नारी ॥ दो. कह हनुमंत सुनहु प्रभु ससि तुम्हारा प्रिय दास। तव मूरति बिधु उर बसति सोइ स्यामता अभास ॥ १२(क) ॥
pūraba disi giriguhā nivāsī| parama pratāpa teja bala rāsī || matta nāga tama kuṃbha bidārī| sasi kesarī gagana bana cārī || bithure nabha mukutāhala tārā| nisi suṃdarī kera siṃgārā || kaha prabhu sasi mahu~ mecakatāī| kahahu kāha nija nija mati bhāī || kaha suga़īva sunahu raghurāī| sasi mahu~ pragaṭa bhūmi kai jhā~ī || māreu rāhu sasihi kaha koī| ura maha~ parī syāmatā soī || kou kaha jaba bidhi rati mukha kīnhā| sāra bhāga sasi kara hari līnhā || chidra so pragaṭa iṃdu ura māhīṃ| tehi maga dekhia nabha parichāhīṃ || prabhu kaha garala baṃdhu sasi kerā| ati priya nija ura dīnha baserā || biṣa saṃjuta kara nikara pasārī| jārata birahavaṃta nara nārī || do. kaha hanumaṃta sunahu prabhu sasi tumhārā priya dāsa| tava mūrati bidhu ura basati soi syāmatā abhāsa || 12(ka) ||

Goswami Tulsidas describes the moon as a supreme reservoir of glory, brilliance, and strength — like a lion dwelling in mountain caves who tears apart the temples of the maddened elephant of darkness, freely roaming the forest of the sky. The stars scattered across the sky are like a pearl-necklace adorning the beauty of the night. The Lord asked all present to explain the dark spot on the moon. Sugriva said it is the shadow of the earth; another said Rahu struck the moon and that wound left the darkness; another explained that when Brahma fashioned the face of Rati, he took the choicest part from the moon, and through that cleft the sky's reflection is seen. The Lord then said that poison (venom) is the moon's brother — the moon took it lovingly into his own heart, but those very venom-laced rays spread out and scorch men and women suffering in the pain of separation. In the concluding doha, Hanuman said: "Lord, the moon is your beloved devotee; your own image resides in his heart — and it is that which appears as the dark shade."
गोस्वामी तुलसीदास चंद्रमा का चित्रण करते हैं — वह परम प्रताप, तेज और बल की राशि है, पर्वत-गुफाओं का निवासी मतवाले हाथी रूपी अंधकार के कुंभ-स्थलों को विदीर्ण करने वाला सिंह है और गगन-वन में विचरण कर रहा है। आकाश में बिखरे तारे रात्रि-सुंदरी के मोती-हार के समान हैं। प्रभु ने सबसे पूछा — "चंद्रमा में जो श्यामलता (काला धब्बा) दिखती है उसका कारण बताओ।" सुग्रीव ने कहा — भूमि की छाया पड़ती है; किसी ने कहा — राहु ने घाव किया और वही कालापन है; किसी ने कहा — ब्रह्मा ने रति का मुख बनाते समय सार भाग चंद्रमा से ले लिया, उसी छिद्र से आकाश की परछाईं दिखती है। तब प्रभु ने कहा — विष (गरल) चंद्रमा का भाई है, उसे उसने अत्यंत प्रिय समझकर अपने हृदय में बसा लिया है; परंतु वही विष-मिश्रित किरणों का जाल फैलाकर विरही नर-नारियों को जलाता रहता है। दोहे में हनुमान ने कहा — "प्रभु, चंद्रमा आपका प्रिय दास है; आपकी मूर्ति उसके हृदय में बसती है और वही श्यामता का आभास देती है।"
