Legend & History
Lord Krishna, the eighth avatar of Vishnu, was born at midnight in a prison cell in Mathura on the eighth day (Ashtami) of the dark fortnight in the month of Bhadrapada. His birth was prophesied to end the tyrannical rule of his maternal uncle, King Kansa. Despite being born in captivity, newborn Krishna miraculously enabled his father Vasudeva to carry him across the flooded Yamuna River to Gokul, where he was raised by Nanda and Yashoda. Krishna's life is celebrated in various texts including Bhagavata Purana and Mahabharata.
