Legend & History
According to Assamese Vaishnava tradition and the Kalika Purana, Hayagriva — the horse-headed form of Vishnu who restored the Vedas stolen by the demons Madhu and Kaitabha — manifested at the Monikut Hill in Hajo. The site was a major center of the Panchasakha Vaishnavism tradition before Sankardev's reform movement. The temple was renovated and expanded by Ahom kings, including Koch Raja Naranarayan in the 16th century, who added the current stone structure.
