Ananthapadmanabha Temple is the only lake temple in Kerala and is believed to be the original seat (Moolasthanam) of Lord Padmanabhaswamy. The temple is built in the middle of a large lake and is accessed by a walkway. The temple is home to a vegetarian crocodile named Babia, believed to be the guardian of the temple, which has been living in the lake for decades. The deity is in a rare sitting posture. The temple has ancient origins and unique architecture with the sanctum surrounded by water on all sides.
Legend & History
According to legend, Sage Vilvamangalathu Swamiyar had a vision of Lord Krishna here. When he tried to embrace the deity, Krishna disappeared and told him he would be present in Ananthapura. Later, Krishna appeared to the saint again and said he would reside in Thiruvananthapuram (Padmanabhaswamy Temple) permanently. Thus, this temple is considered the original abode. The vegetarian crocodile Babia is believed to be over 70 years old and is fed vegetarian offerings by the temple priests. The previous temple crocodile lived for over 60 years.
