FAQ

What is Panchang?

Panchang is the Hindu calendar system made of five limbs (angas) — Tithi (lunar day), Nakshatra (lunar mansion), Yoga (Sun-Moon combination), Karana (half of a Tithi) and Vaar (weekday). It determines auspicious muhurat, fasts and pooja timings.

What are Rahu Kaal, Gulika Kaal and Yamaganda?

They are one-eighth divisions of the daytime (sunrise to sunset) considered inauspicious. Starting new work, travel, marriage or investments is best avoided during these windows. The timings shift each day and with each city's sunrise.

What is Abhijit Muhurat?

It is an auspicious window of about 48 minutes around local solar noon, considered favourable for most important tasks (except when it overlaps Rahu Kaal).

How is today's Tithi decided?

By Vedic convention the Tithi prevailing at sunrise governs the whole day, which is why the Tithi's end-time is also shown.

Which Panchang does VedKosh use?

The standard all-India Vedic (Lahiri/nirayana) Panchang in Indian Standard Time (IST), computed from sunrise for the selected city.
