Significance

The Venkateswara Temple in Tirumala is one of the richest and most visited religious sites in the world, receiving over 50,000 to 100,000 pilgrims daily. Located on the seven hills of Tirumala at 2,800 feet above sea level, the temple is dedicated to Lord Venkateswara, a form of Vishnu. The temple is known for its immense wealth, with devotees offering their hair as a tonsure (offering). The main deity stands in Garbhagriha with diamond eyes. Annual income runs into billions, making it the wealthiest temple in India.

Legend & History

According to legend, Lord Venkateswara incarnated on Earth in Kali Yuga to save humanity. He borrowed money from Kubera (the god of wealth) to arrange his wedding with Goddess Padmavati. It is believed that he is still repaying this loan, which is why devotees donate money to the temple. The deity is also called Balaji, meaning 'the one with strength'. The temple's history dates back over 2,000 years. Saint Ramanujacharya visited this temple in the 11th century and contributed to its fame. The temple follows Vaikhanasa Agama tradition for worship.

पौराणिक कथा के अनुसार, भगवान वेंकटेश्वर ने कलियुग में मानवता को बचाने के लिए पृथ्वी पर अवतार लिया। उन्होंने देवी पद्मावती के साथ अपनी शादी की व्यवस्था करने के लिए कुबेर (धन के देवता) से पैसे उधार लिए। माना जाता है कि वे अभी भी इस ऋण को चुका रहे हैं, यही कारण है कि भक्त मंदिर को धन दान करते हैं। देवता को बालाजी भी कहा जाता है, जिसका अर्थ है 'शक्ति वाला'।
