Significance

Krishna Janmabhoomi marks the birthplace of Lord Krishna in Mathura, one of the Sapta Puri (seven sacred cities). The temple complex includes the prison cell where Krishna was born to Devaki and Vasudeva while they were imprisoned by the tyrant King Kansa. Mathura-Vrindavan region is the land where Krishna spent his childhood performing divine leelas (pastimes). The temple attracts millions of devotees, especially during Janmashtami.

Legend & History

Lord Krishna, the eighth avatar of Vishnu, was born at midnight in a prison cell in Mathura on the eighth day (Ashtami) of the dark fortnight in the month of Bhadrapada. His birth was prophesied to end the tyrannical rule of his maternal uncle, King Kansa. Despite being born in captivity, newborn Krishna miraculously enabled his father Vasudeva to carry him across the flooded Yamuna River to Gokul, where he was raised by Nanda and Yashoda. Krishna's life is celebrated in various texts including Bhagavata Purana and Mahabharata.

भगवान कृष्ण, विष्णु के आठवें अवतार, भाद्रपद महीने की कृष्ण पक्ष की अष्टमी को मध्यरात्रि में मथुरा की एक कारागार कोठरी में जन्मे थे। उनके जन्म की भविष्यवाणी उनके मामा, राजा कंस के अत्याचारी शासन को समाप्त करने के लिए की गई थी। कैद में जन्म लेने के बावजूद, नवजात कृष्ण ने चमत्कारिक रूप से अपने पिता वासुदेव को बाढ़ ग्रस्त यमुना नदी को पार करके गोकुल ले जाने में सक्षम बनाया, जहां उनका पालन-पोषण नंद और यशोदा ने किया।
