Chhinnamasta Temple

Significance

Chhinnamasta Temple is one of the most powerful and mysterious Shakti Peeths. The goddess is depicted in her fierce form holding her own severed head, with three streams of blood flowing - two feeding her attendants and one into her own mouth. The temple is located at the confluence of rivers Damodar and Bhairavi, which adds to its spiritual significance.

Legend & History

The legend states that once Goddess Parvati went to bathe with her two attendants, Dakini and Varnini. Her attendants felt hungry and asked for food. To satisfy their hunger, the compassionate goddess severed her own head, and three streams of blood emerged to feed them and herself. This represents the goddess as the ultimate provider and the cycle of life and death. Tantric practices are prevalent here.

कथा बताती है कि एक बार देवी पार्वती अपनी दो सहायकों, डाकिनी और वर्णिनी के साथ स्नान करने गईं। उनकी सहायकों को भूख लगी और उन्होंने भोजन मांगा। उनकी भूख मिटाने के लिए, दयालु देवी ने अपना ही सिर काट दिया, और रक्त की तीन धाराएं निकलीं जो उन्हें और खुद को खिलाने के लिए थीं। यह देवी को परम प्रदाता और जीवन और मृत्यु के चक्र के रूप में दर्शाता है। यहां तांत्रिक प्रथाएं प्रचलित हैं।
