Kamakshi Amman Temple

Significance

Kamakshi Amman Temple is one of the most important temples in South India and one of the 51 Shakti Peeths. The goddess is depicted in a seated yogic posture, symbolizing peace and prosperity. This is unique as most Shakti idols show the goddess in a standing position. The temple is one of the three holiest Shakti temples in India, along with Madurai and Varanasi.

Legend & History

Legend says that Goddess Parvati worshipped Lord Shiva in the form of a linga made of sand under a mango tree in Kanchipuram to reunite with him. The temple marks the spot where she performed penance. Adi Shankaracharya established the Sri Chakra at this temple in the 8th century, which is still worshipped today. The temple has a golden chariot and conducts elaborate rituals throughout the year.

कथा कहती है कि देवी पार्वती ने कांचीपुरम में एक आम के पेड़ के नीचे रेत से बने लिंग के रूप में भगवान शिव की पूजा की ताकि उनके साथ फिर से मिल सकें। मंदिर उस स्थान को चिह्नित करता है जहां उन्होंने तपस्या की थी। आदि शंकराचार्य ने 8वीं शताब्दी में इस मंदिर में श्री चक्र की स्थापना की, जिसकी आज भी पूजा की जाती है। मंदिर में एक सुनहरा रथ है और साल भर विस्तृत अनुष्ठान आयोजित किए जाते हैं।
