Mahalakshmi Temple, Kolhapur

Significance

The Mahalakshmi Temple in Kolhapur is one of the Shakti Peeths and is unique as the idol faces west, unlike most Hindu temples where deities face east. The temple is dedicated to Goddess Mahalakshmi (a form of Shakti) and is considered one of the most powerful temples in Maharashtra. The goddess is depicted with four hands holding symbolic objects.

Legend & History

According to legend, the demon Kolhasura terrorized the region. The goddess took refuge in a cave and eventually defeated the demon. The city Kolhapur is named after him. The temple architecture follows Hemadpanthi style and dates back to the 7th century, though it was reconstructed in the 9th century by the Chalukya ruler. The temple has a unique tradition of not closing its doors throughout the year.

पौराणिक कथा के अनुसार, राक्षस कोल्हासुर ने क्षेत्र को आतंकित किया। देवी ने एक गुफा में शरण ली और अंततः राक्षस को पराजित कर दिया। शहर कोल्हापुर का नाम उसी के नाम पर पड़ा है। मंदिर की वास्तुकला हेमाडपंथी शैली का अनुसरण करती है और 7वीं शताब्दी की है, हालांकि इसे 9वीं शताब्दी में चालुक्य शासक द्वारा पुनर्निर्मित किया गया था। मंदिर की एक अनूठी परंपरा है कि यह साल भर अपने दरवाजे बंद नहीं करता।
