Mahakaleshwar

Significance

The only Jyotirlinga facing south (Dakshinmukhi). Known for the unique Bhasma Aarti performed at dawn using sacred ash. Ujjain is one of the four sites for Kumbh Mela.

एकमात्र दक्षिणमुखी ज्योतिर्लिंग। भोर में पवित्र भस्म का उपयोग करके किए जाने वाले अनूठे भस्म आरती के लिए प्रसिद्ध। उज्जैन कुंभ मेले के चार स्थलों में से एक है।

Legend & History

The demon Dushana terrorized the people of Ujjain. A young boy named Shrikhar prayed to Lord Shiva, who emerged from the earth as Mahakal and destroyed the demon. Shiva then resided there as Mahakaleshwar, the Lord of Time.

राक्षस दूषण ने उज्जैन के लोगों को आतंकित किया। श्रीखर नामक एक युवा लड़के ने भगवान शिव से प्रार्थना की, जो महाकाल के रूप में पृथ्वी से प्रकट हुए और राक्षस को नष्ट किया। शिव तब महाकालेश्वर, समय के स्वामी के रूप में वहां निवास करने लगे।
