Jagannath Temple, Puri

Significance

The Jagannath Temple in Puri is one of the Char Dham pilgrimage sites and one of the most sacred Vishnu temples. It is famous for the annual Rath Yatra (chariot festival) which attracts millions of devotees. The temple was built in the 12th century by King Anantavarman Chodaganga Deva. The temple complex covers 10.7 acres and has a 65-meter-tall main tower. The temple flag changes direction with the wind, and its shadow is never visible.

Legend & History

According to legend, King Indradyumna was instructed by Lord Vishnu in a dream to construct a temple. He found a log floating in the sea, from which deities were carved. Lord Brahma came to consecrate the temple. The deities of Jagannath (Krishna), Balabhadra (Balarama), and Subhadra are unique wooden idols that are ceremonially replaced every 12-19 years in the Navakalevara ceremony. The Mahaprasad (sacred food) is considered supremely holy.

पौराणिक कथा के अनुसार, राजा इंद्रद्युम्न को स्वप्न में भगवान विष्णु द्वारा एक मंदिर बनाने का निर्देश दिया गया था। उन्हें समुद्र में तैरता एक लकड़ी का लट्ठा मिला, जिससे देवताओं को उकेरा गया। भगवान ब्रह्मा मंदिर को पवित्र करने आए। जगन्नाथ, बलभद्र और सुभद्रा की मूर्तियां अनोखी लकड़ी की मूर्तियां हैं जिन्हें नवकलेवर समारोह में हर 12-19 वर्षों में औपचारिक रूप से बदला जाता है।
