Badrinath Temple

Significance

Badrinath is one of the holiest Hindu temples dedicated to Lord Vishnu, situated between the Nar and Narayana mountain ranges in the Garhwal Himalayas at 10,279 feet. It is one of the 108 Divya Desams and part of the Char Dham pilgrimage circuit. The temple was re-established by Adi Shankaracharya in the 8th century CE. The temple opens only six months a year due to extreme weather conditions.

Legend & History

According to legend, Lord Vishnu was performing penance in the area when Goddess Lakshmi protected him from harsh weather by transforming into a Badri tree (Indian jujube). Hence, the place came to be known as Badri-Vishal and later Badrinath. The temple houses a 1-meter-tall black stone idol of Lord Vishnu in a meditative posture.

पौराणिक कथा के अनुसार, भगवान विष्णु इस क्षेत्र में तपस्या कर रहे थे जब देवी लक्ष्मी ने बदरी के पेड़ में परिवर्तित होकर कठोर मौसम से उनकी रक्षा की। इसलिए, यह स्थान बदरी-विशाल और बाद में बदरीनाथ के नाम से जाना गया।
