Kurma Jayanti (May 12, 2026) celebrates the manifestation of Lord Vishnu as the Kurma (tortoise) avatar — his second avatara. Kurma Jayanti 2026 falls on Vaishakha Purnima (May 12). During the Samudra Manthan, the gods and demons used Mount Mandara as a churning rod and Vasuki serpent as the rope. When the mountain began to sink, Lord Vishnu incarnated as Kurma and held it on his shell for thousands of years. From the churning emerged: Dhanvantari (medicine god), Lakshmi (goddess of wealth), Kaustubha gem, Parijata tree, Airavata elephant, Apsaras, and finally Amrit. Rituals: Worship a tortoise idol or image (or draw one with rice flour), offer sesame seeds, Tulsi, and yellow flowers. Recite the Kurma Purana\'s Samudra Manthan story.
