The festival is hosted by the Thiruvambadi Sri Krishna Temple and Paramekavu Bhagavathi Temple in competition — both bringing 15 magnificently decorated elephants in a face-off called 'Elappara.' The climax is the Kudamattam (umbrella exchange ceremony) where elaborately decorated umbrellas are swapped between the two temples\' elephants in a dazzling display. This is followed by the 'Ilanjithara Melam' — Kerala\'s most celebrated percussion performance — and the stunning fireworks display (vedikettu) at dawn. For Hindu visitors: the presiding deity is Lord Shiva (Vadakkunnathan). Darshan, Shiva puja, and participation in the melam are considered highly auspicious. UNESCO has recognized the Panchavadyam tradition associated with this festival.
