Bestu Varas (literally 'New Year' in Gujarati) is the Gujarati New Year, celebrated on the first day of Kartik Shukla Pratipada — the day after Diwali (Amavasya). In the Vikram Samvat calendar, this is the beginning of Samvat 2083 (in 2026). On Bestu Varas, businesspeople and traders open their new account books (Chopda Puja) with prayers to Lakshmi and Ganesha. The festival is one of the most significant in Gujarat's commercial calendar — new financial beginnings, family gatherings, and visits to temples mark the day. The greeting 'Saal Mubarak' (Happy New Year in Gujarati/Urdu) or 'Nutan Varsh Abhinandan' is exchanged. Laborers and business owners traditionally settle accounts and exchange gifts.
