đ¯ī¸ Saturday Peepal Tree Deepam â 10 Rules
Want the step-by-step how-to? Peepal Deepam Vidhi (Set 25) â
â Only after sunset
Light the Peepal lamp 30 minutes after sunset. Lighting during the day becomes Surya puja, not Pitru tarpan.
â Mustard oil â no substitute
Do not use ghee or other oils. Mustard is Shani's favourite. There is no substitute.
â Face west
Lamp must face west â Shani's direction. East or north is incorrect.
đĢ Do not go barefoot
Do not go under the Peepal barefoot â especially in the evening. Remove shoes but socks are fine.
đĢ Do not offer Tulsi
Tulsi = Vishnu's consort. Peepal = Shani/Pitru. Mixing these two is forbidden.
â No thick wick
Use a thin 7-strand cotton wick â burns longer. A thick wick produces smoke which is inauspicious.
â Offer water to roots first
Before the lamp offer water + black sesame at the Peepal root. Chant "Om Pitru Devaya Namah" 3 times.
đĢ Do not extinguish the lamp
Let the lamp burn out on its own. Blowing it out or extinguishing it mid-way is considered inauspicious.
đĢ Not during menstruation
Women should not approach the Peepal tree during menstruation â traditional rule.
â Iron vessel for oil
You can use a clay lamp, but an iron bowl is more effective as iron is Shani's metal.
