Tulsi Vivah — Prabodhini Ekadashi, Gujarat 2026
About this festival
Tulsi Vivah is the ceremonial marriage of the Tulsi plant (sacred basil) to Lord Vishnu (in his Shaligram or Bal Krishna form), observed on Prabodhini Ekadashi — the 11th day of Kartik Shukla (bright fortnight). This festival marks the end of the Chaturmas (four auspicious months of Ashadh to Kartik during the monsoon) and the start of the Hindu wedding season. According to legend, Tulsi (Vrinda), a devoted woman, was transformed into the Tulsi plant by Vishnu. In Gujarat, Tulsi Vivah is celebrated as a family event — the Tulsi pot is decorated with a canopy (mandap) of sugarcane stalks, the Tulsi is dressed as a bride with red saree and jewelry, and a small Shaligram stone represents Vishnu/Krishna the groom. Mantras, garlands, and sweets are exchanged. After Tulsi Vivah, Hindu weddings resume (the 'wedding season opener').
