📖 Significance of Gudi Padwa

As described in the Brahma Purana, Brahma commenced the creation of the universe on Chaitra Shukla Pratipada. Hence this day is the first day of the Hindu New Year. In Maharashtra it is called "Gudi Padwa" — where "Gudi" is a victory flag.

According to legend, King Shalivahana created an army from clay, defeated the Shakas, and hoisted a Gudi in celebration of victory. This tradition continues to this day.
