🕯️ Saturday Peepal Tree Deepam — 10 Rules

Want the step-by-step how-to? Peepal Deepam Vidhi (Set 25) →

1

Only after sunset

Light the Peepal lamp 30 minutes after sunset. Lighting during the day becomes Surya puja, not Pitru tarpan.

2

Mustard oil — no substitute

Do not use ghee or other oils. Mustard is Shani's favourite. There is no substitute.

3

Face west

Lamp must face west — Shani's direction. East or north is incorrect.

4

🚫 Do not go barefoot

Do not go under the Peepal barefoot — especially in the evening. Remove shoes but socks are fine.

5

🚫 Do not offer Tulsi

Tulsi = Vishnu's consort. Peepal = Shani/Pitru. Mixing these two is forbidden.

6

No thick wick

Use a thin 7-strand cotton wick — burns longer. A thick wick produces smoke which is inauspicious.

7

Offer water to roots first

Before the lamp offer water + black sesame at the Peepal root. Chant "Om Pitru Devaya Namah" 3 times.

8

🚫 Do not extinguish the lamp

Let the lamp burn out on its own. Blowing it out or extinguishing it mid-way is considered inauspicious.

9

🚫 Not during menstruation

Women should not approach the Peepal tree during menstruation — traditional rule.

10

Iron vessel for oil

You can use a clay lamp, but an iron bowl is more effective as iron is Shani's metal.
