📖 The Birth Story
Surya Dev's wife Sanjna could not bear his blazing radiance. She created a shadow-twin (Chhaya) to serve as her proxy and left for the forest to perform penance.
From the union of Chhaya and Surya were born three children — Shani Dev, Yamraj, and the river Tapti. During Shani's gestation, Chhaya was so deeply absorbed in her penance to Lord Shiva that she barely ate.
As a result of this intense tapas, Shani was born dark-complexioned (dark blue-black) and a devoted worshipper of Shiva. Once, the infant Shani looked sidelong at Surya Dev himself — and the sun's chariot shook violently. Since then, the world has feared Shani's glance.
Shani Dev was once freed from Lanka's captivity by Hanuman Ji — which is why Shani lightens his gaze upon devoted Hanuman bhaktas.
