SOUR FOOD — STRICTLY FORBIDDEN!

During the fast, sour food is completely forbidden for the fasting person AND all family members. Even one person eating sour food can nullify the fast's benefit.

Tamarind and tamarind products
Curd (dahi) and buttermilk
Pickles (achar)
Raw mangoes
Vinegar
Tomatoes (very sour)
Jackfruit pickle

16-Friday Vrat Rules

  • Observe 16 consecutive Friday fasts
  • Eat only once on fast day (after sunset)
  • Eat only sweet items — jaggery-chana, kheer, halwa
  • No family member should eat sour food
  • Perform udyapan after completing 16 fasts
  • Feed 5 children kheer during udyapan

Vrat Method — Step by Step

1On Friday morning, bathe and wear red clothes
2Install Santoshi Maa idol or picture
3Offer incense, lamp and red/pink flowers
4Perform Santoshi Maa aarti
5Recite the vrat katha
6Prepare jaggery and chana prasad and offer as bhog
7Perform aarti again in the evening
8Distribute prasad in family — do not touch sour items
