The Monkey and the Crocodile

рдмрдВрджрд░ рдФрд░ рдордЧрд░рдордЪреНрдЫ

A clever monkey outwits a treacherous crocodile who tries to trick him тАФ a famous tale from the Panchatantra.

In a great forest beside a wide and shining river, there lived a monkey named Raktamukha who had made his home in a rose-apple tree on the bank. The tree was enormous and its fruits were the sweetest in the whole forest.

One day, a crocodile named Karalamukha swam to the bank and lay resting in the sun. The monkey, who was always friendly, called down from the tree.

"Hello, friend! You look tired. Here тАФ have some rose apples!" He threw a handful of the sweet red fruits down to the crocodile.

The crocodile ate them and was astonished. He had never tasted anything so delicious. He came back the next day, and the next, and soon the monkey and the crocodile had become the best of friends. They would talk for hours тАФ about the river, the jungle, the stars.

The crocodile took home some rose apples for his wife. She ate them and her eyes lit up. "These are extraordinary! The monkey who eats these every day must have the sweetest heart in the world. Bring me the monkey's heart тАФ I want to eat it!"

The crocodile was horrified. "He is my best friend!"

"Then you must choose," said his wife coldly. "Your friend тАФ or me."

With a heavy heart, the crocodile went to the tree the next day. "Friend," he said, "my wife invites you to our home for dinner. She wishes to meet you."

The monkey was touched and happy. He climbed down and sat on the crocodile's back as they swam out onto the river.

Halfway across, the crocodile began to swim deeper.

"Why are we going deeper?" asked the monkey.

The crocodile felt deeply ashamed, and in his shame he blurted out the truth. "My wife wants your heart. I have to take you to her."

The monkey felt fear shoot through him тАФ but he did not show it. He kept his face completely calm and smiled.

"Oh, is that all?" he said lightly. "Why didn't you say so? I would have brought my heart! But you see, monkeys don't carry their hearts with them when they travel. For safekeeping, I left mine hanging in the rose-apple tree. Take me back and I'll get it for you."

The foolish crocodile, relieved to have a solution, turned and swam back to the bank.

The moment his feet touched the tree roots, the monkey leaped up into the branches and sat safe and high above.

"You tricked me!" the crocodile cried.

"You were going to betray me," said the monkey calmly from above. "You lost a true friend today because your wife asked you to. I hope you think carefully about who truly cares for you."

The crocodile swam away in shame and never returned. And the monkey, wiser now, was always careful about who he trusted тАФ but never stopped being kind.
