Baby Hanuman and the Sun

The amazing story of baby Hanuman who thought the glowing red sun was a giant mango and flew up to eat it!

Long before Hanuman became the greatest devotee of Lord Rama, he was just a curious, mischievous, hungry little baby тАФ the son of Anjana and the Wind God Vayu.

One golden morning, baby Hanuman woke up alone. His mother had gone to collect fruits and left him playing on a soft mat outside their forest home. Little Hanuman stretched his arms, yawned a very big yawn, and looked around for something to eat.

He looked up at the sky.

There, round and red and glowing like the most enormous, juiciest mango he had ever seen, was the rising sun.

Baby Hanuman's eyes went wide. His tummy rumbled.

Without a moment's hesitation, he crouched low, coiled his tiny legs, and тАФ LEAP!

He shot upward into the sky, arms stretched out, giggling with delight, zooming higher and higher toward the great glowing sun.

In the heavens, the gods looked down with alarm. Indra, the king of the gods, raised his thunderbolt. "Stop that child!" he cried. "He'll swallow the sun and plunge the whole world into darkness!"

Indra hurled his thunderbolt. It struck little Hanuman on the chin тАФ and the baby tumbled down from the sky, landing safely in his father Vayu's arms.

But Vayu was furious. His own son, struck by a thunderbolt? He wrapped his arms around Hanuman and disappeared into a cave тАФ taking all the air of the world with him!

Immediately, every living thing on earth began to gasp. The trees shook. Animals fell still. Even the gods found it hard to breathe. Indra came to apologize. Then Brahma came. Then Shiva. Then all the gods together came to bless the sleeping child.

Brahma gently healed Hanuman's chin. Shiva gave him protection that no weapon could pierce. Indra gave him a boon that would make him immortal. Vayu, seeing his son blessed by every god in existence, smiled and released the air back into the world.

Hanuman opened his eyes, looked around at the circle of glowing gods, and then looked back up at the sky тАФ where the sun was now rising properly, warm and steady.

Something had changed. A tiny smile played on his lips. He didn't fully understand it yet, but somewhere deep inside, the baby who had reached for the sun had just learned that he could reach for anything.

And he never stopped.
