The Little Squirrel Who Helped Build the Bridge

The heartwarming story of a tiny squirrel whose small act of love was personally honoured by Lord Rama.

When Lord Rama needed to cross the ocean to reach Lanka and rescue Sita, his army of monkeys and bears decided to build the greatest bridge the world had ever seen. They would build it entirely across the ocean тАФ from the southern shores of India all the way to Lanka.

Thousands of mighty monkeys and bears threw themselves into the work. They hauled enormous boulders, uprooted entire mountains, tore enormous trees from the earth, and hurled them all into the sea. Hour by hour, the legendary bridge тАФ later called the Ram Setu тАФ slowly took shape. The stones floated miraculously because the monkeys wrote "Ram" on each one before dropping it in.

Everyone who could help, did help. The animals of nearby forests came to watch, and many joined in. The spirit of devotion filled the air.

And then there was one tiny creature working just as hard as the biggest monkeys тАФ a little squirrel.

She watched the warriors carrying massive rocks and felt her heart swell with the same love for Lord Rama. But what could a small squirrel do? Her paws could not even carry a pebble the size of her nose!

But then she had an idea. She ran to the sandy beach and rolled her tiny furry body in the damp sand until she was completely covered. Then she trotted to the edge of the growing bridge and shook herself тАФ and the grains of sand sprinkled into the tiny gaps between the great stones.

Again and again she did this тАФ running to the shore, rolling in the wet sand, scurrying back, shaking the grains into the cracks. Back and forth, back and forth, faster than her little legs could properly manage.

Some of the larger monkeys noticed her and laughed. "Move aside, little one! What are you doing? A few grains of sand cannot help build a bridge!"

The squirrel felt a sting of embarrassment тАФ but turned around and ran back to the shore again. Her love for Rama was bigger than any boulder. She would not stop.

Lord Rama saw it all. Every trip. Every grain. He reached down, picked up the tiny squirrel in his great warm hands, and held her up so all the warriors could see.

"This little one," he said gently, "works with as much love and devotion as any of you тАФ perhaps even more. The stones fill the ocean. The sand fills the gaps between the stones. Both are needed. Every offering of love has its place."

Then Rama softly stroked the squirrel three times along her back тАФ and from that touch, three golden lines appeared on her fur, glowing with the warmth of Lord Rama's fingers.

Even today, the striped squirrels of India carry those three lines on their backs тАФ the mark left by Lord Rama's loving touch, thousands of years ago.

The next time you see a squirrel darting about busily, remember the little one who helped build a bridge тАФ not with strength, but with love.

No act of devotion is too small. Every effort made with love truly matters.
