Ganesha Wins the Race

The clever story of how wise Ganesha outsmarts his speedy brother Kartikeya in a race around the entire world.

High on the snowy peaks of Mount Kailash, Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati had two sons. The elder was Kartikeya тАФ tall, strong, and strikingly handsome, who rode a magnificent peacock and had never lost a race or a battle. The younger was Ganesha тАФ plump, cheerful, and wonderfully clever, who rode a tiny mouse and whose elephant head held more wisdom than anyone suspected.

One day, the great sage Narada arrived at Kailash carrying a single spectacular mango тАФ the Fruit of Knowledge and Divine Sweetness. It could only be given to one person.

Both Kartikeya and Ganesha wanted it immediately and started bickering. Narada smiled at Parvati and Shiva with a mischievous twinkle in his eye.

Lord Shiva raised one hand. "Enough! There shall be a contest. Whoever circles the entire world three times and returns here first shall win the mango."

Kartikeya did not wait even a second. He leaped onto his peacock, spread his wings to their full and glorious span, and shot across the sky like an arrow loosed from a bow. He was already over the mountains before Ganesha had moved.

Ganesha stood quietly and looked at his tiny mouse. Then he looked up at the distant dot that was his brother disappearing into the horizon. He thought carefully for a long moment.

Then his eyes sparkled.

Ganesha walked calmly to where his parents sat together. He stood before them with his hands folded respectfully, and then тАФ slowly, deliberately, and with great tenderness тАФ he walked around them in a complete circle. Then again. Then a third time. He completed three rounds of his parents, then stood before them and bowed.

"I am done," Ganesha said simply.

Shiva and Parvati looked at each other with raised eyebrows. "What do you mean?"

Ganesha smiled his warm, open smile. "You told me to circle the world three times. But you, my mother and father, ARE my entire world. My parents are my universe. There is no world beyond you that matters to me. I went around my world three times."

For a long, beautiful moment there was complete silence on Mount Kailash.

Then Parvati laughed тАФ a clear, delighted laugh тАФ and clapped her hands. Shiva's face broke into the widest, proudest smile. He reached out and placed the golden mango in Ganesha's hands.

Just then Kartikeya came blazing back down from the sky, feathers ruffled, out of breath, triumphant тАФ he had genuinely raced around the entire planet three times! When he saw Ganesha already eating the mango, his mouth fell open.

When the story was explained, Kartikeya was quiet for a moment тАФ and then he nodded. Even he could see that his younger brother had not tricked anyone. Ganesha had simply understood something true and important: that love and wisdom together are always greater than mere speed.

And that is why even today, Lord Ganesha тАФ the god of wisdom and new beginnings тАФ is always worshipped first, before any journey or any task begins.
