What Are the Vedas?

The word "Veda" derives from the Sanskrit root "vid" — meaning "to know." The Vedas are the oldest and most authoritative scriptures of Hinduism. They are apaurusheya — not authored by any human, but divine knowledge revealed to seers (rishis) in deep meditation.

Shruti

"That which is heard" — the Vedas and Upanishads. Directly revealed; highest authority.

Smriti

"That which is remembered" — Puranas, Mahabharata, Ramayana, Manusmriti. Based on Shruti.
