Lalitha Tripurasundari — Who is She?

Lalitha Tripurasundari (also called Rajarajeshvari, Sri Devi, or Sri Lalitha) is the supreme among the ten Mahavidyas (great wisdom goddesses). 'Tripurasundari' means 'most beautiful in all three worlds.' In the Sri Vidya tradition, she IS Parabrahman (the ultimate reality) — the universe is merely her play (lila). Her worship centers on the Sri Yantra and the Panchadashi mantra.

1000 Names — By Thematic Aspect

Beauty · Power · Compassion · Cosmic Form — four root aspects

Names of Beauty (Saundarya)

Names 1–111

The first hundred names open with Lalitha as the supreme queen (Shri Maharajni) seated on the lion-throne (Simhasana). She is born from the fire of pure consciousness (Chidagnikunda sambhoota) — not from a womb but from the cosmic fire of awareness itself. These names establish her absolute sovereignty and her origin beyond the material world.

Names of Power (Shakti)

Names 112–222

The Shakti names describe the terrifying power Lalitha wields — her weapons (Pasham, Ankusham, Sugarcane bow, Five flower arrows), her armies of Shaktis, and her role as the destroyer of Bhandasura. She is simultaneously beautiful and terrifying — the complete expression of the divine feminine as both creator and destroyer.

Names of Compassion (Karuna)

Names 223–333

Lalitha is present in the deepest aspects of Vedic ritual — Svaha (the exclamation that sends offerings to the gods), Svadha (the offering to ancestors), Amati (the formless). She is accessible to all: Brahmin, warrior, merchant, and laborer. The compassion names show that the terrifying Goddess is also the mother who tenderly hears every prayer.

Names of Cosmic Form (Vishwarupa)

Names 334–444

Lalitha as the cosmic womb (Vishwa-garbha) who contains all worlds, as the golden-naveled one (Swarnanabhi), as the bestower of boons (Varada). She is Vak (speech), accessible only through meditation (Dhyana-gamya). These names connect the personal goddess to the impersonal Brahman — she IS the universe, not just a ruler of it.

Sri Vidya — Four Core Principles

Mantra · Yantra · Tantra · Puranic context

Sri Vidya — The Sacred Knowledge

Sri Vidya is the tantric tradition that worships Lalitha Tripurasundari as the supreme reality. The Lalitha Sahasranamam is the primary liturgical text of this tradition. Sri Vidya is unusual in that it treats the goddess as Brahman (ultimate reality) rather than merely a deity — the universe itself is her body, consciousness is her nature, and liberation is union with her.

The Panchadashi Mantra

The 15-syllable root mantra of Sri Vidya: Ka-E-I-La-Hreem (Vagbhava kuta) / Ha-Sa-Ka-Ha-La-Hreem (Madhya kuta) / Sa-Ka-La-Hreem (Shakti kuta). This is the mantra at the heart of the Lalitha Sahasranamam. Each cluster (kuta) represents one of the three aspects of reality: speech/knowledge, middle (consciousness), and power. The mantra is considered so powerful that in classical texts it is only transmitted guru-to-disciple.

Brahmanda Purana — Source Text

The Lalitha Sahasranamam occurs in the Brahmanda Purana, within a sub-section called the Lalitopakhyana (the story of Lalitha). Hayagriva (a form of Vishnu with a horse's head, lord of speech and wisdom) recited these names to Agastya Muni at his request on the banks of the Godavari river. This frame story is important: even Vishnu (in his Hayagriva form) acknowledges that Lalitha is the supreme reality.

Sri Yantra — Geometric Body

The Sri Yantra (nine interlocking triangles — five pointing down, four pointing up) is the geometric form of Lalitha Tripurasundari. Each of the 43 triangles corresponds to a group of her names. Worshipping the Sri Yantra while reciting the Sahasranamam is considered the highest form of practice. The central point (bindu) represents Lalitha in her most essential, formless state.

The Panchadashi Mantra — 15 Seed Syllables

Madhya Kuta (Consciousness)

Ha-Sa-Ka-Ha-La-Hreem

ह-स-क-ह-ल-ह्रीं

Shakti Kuta (Power)

The three kutas together form the Panchadashi. Knowledge + Consciousness + Power = the Lalitha-tattva.
