📖 Ayodhya Kand Shree Ramcharitmanas by Goswami Tulsidas — Rama's Exile, Dasharatha's Death, Bharat's Devotion & Paduka Pooja

I worship the lotus feet of my Guru, who is an ocean of mercy and is God Himself in human form. His words, like the sun's rays, dispel the darkness of deep ignorance and delusion.

I worship Bhagwan Shree Rama, whose divine name is greater than both the formless Absolute (Brahman) and the embodied Divine. The name of Rama is the luminous bridge between the two — I bow to that supreme, bliss-giving Name.

I reverently salute Sita and Rama — the progenitors of the universe, the parents of creation. Just as speech and meaning are inseparable, so are Sita and Rama — I worship Them, the bestowers of every blessing.

All glory to the King of Ayodhya, Shree Ramachandra — the ocean of compassion and the abode of all noble virtues. He is the supreme refuge of the distressed and the protector of the three worlds.

May the divine glory of the sacred city of Ayodhya ever shine forth — that wondrous city where the Supreme Lord Himself appeared in human form. Blessed are those who sing its praises with devotion.

I worship the divine pair Sita and Rama, who together protect the world. Their divine play enchants the hearts of gods and sages alike — one single glance from Them washes away all sins.

The Ramcharitmanas is the sacred lake of Shree Rama's deeds. It purifies all who bathe in its waters. I worship Goswami Tulsidas, through whose blessed pen this immortal scripture came into being.

I bow to all the saints, whose hearts are ever filled with the nectar of Rama's love. By their mere association, the soul is purified — they are the living embodiments of divine compassion.

I worship the lotus feet of Hanuman, who is the abode of strength, wisdom, and devotion. He is the chief among the servants of Shree Rama — the very gateway to the Lord's grace.

May the name of Shree Rama, which is the essence of all the Vedas, dwell forever upon my tongue. This holy name is the ship that carries souls across the ocean of worldly existence.

Now hear with devoted attention the beautiful story of Ayodhya Kand — the tale of how destiny unfolded for the sake of the Lord's divine purpose. Though outwardly sorrowful, this account is the very wellspring of ultimate bliss.

The Ayodhya Kand is beautiful, sanctifying, the very abode of bliss. May Shree Rama grant me the ability to narrate it with full devotion and purity of heart — thus begins the second staircase (Sopaan) of the Ramcharitmanas.

King Dasharatha's heart was filled with supreme joy, for the time had come to crown Shree Rama as the heir-apparent. All of Ayodhya celebrated — the streets were decorated with flowers, flags, and festoons.

Guru Vashishtha advised the king — 'O great monarch, the auspicious hour draws near. Let Shree Rama be installed as the Yuvaraja (crown prince) — it will bring happiness to the entire kingdom.'

The king's eyes brimmed with tears of joy upon hearing the Guru's words. He summoned all the ministers and nobles and declared his intention to anoint Rama on the morrow.

The entire city erupted in celebration — drums sounded, conches blew, and the people sang with unrestrained delight. 'Rama shall be our king!' — this joyful cry resounded through every lane and home.

When Shree Rama heard the news, He remained calm and detached, for the Lord of the universe is beyond the pull of worldly honour. Yet He graciously accepted His father's wish as an act of filial devotion.

Mother Kausalya was overcome with maternal joy. She blessed Shree Rama with tears flowing from her eyes. The three queens embraced one another — their happiness knew no bounds.

Sita heard the auspicious tidings and her beautiful face blossomed like a lotus. The divine couple — Sita and Rama — shone with a radiance that illuminated the three worlds.

Lakshmana, Bharata, and Shatrughna were all filled with supreme delight. They adorned themselves and proceeded to serve Shree Rama with utmost love and reverence.

The Brahmins chanted Vedic hymns, the priests prepared the sacred fire, and the women of Ayodhya sang melodious songs of celebration. The very heavens seemed to descend upon the earth in joy.

The coronation materials were assembled with great care — sacred water from all the holy rivers, gem-studded vessels, fragrant sandalwood paste, and the royal throne of the Raghu dynasty.

All the citizens of Ayodhya — young and old, men and women — thronged the streets and markets. Their loving conversations were filled with one single topic — the glory of Shree Rama.

The gods and celestial beings in heaven also rejoiced at the news of Rama's coronation. They rained flowers upon Ayodhya and sang divine hymns in praise of the Lord.

The cows gave abundant milk, the trees bore fruit, and the rivers flowed with clear, sweet water — as though all of nature herself celebrated the prospect of Rama's rule.

King Dasharatha instructed — 'Let the entire kingdom be informed. Let every home be decorated. Tomorrow, the auspicious tilak ceremony shall take place — Rama shall ascend the throne.'

The news spread like wildfire through the streets. Every citizen's heart danced with joy. They decorated their houses with garlands of mango leaves, lit lamps, and raised colourful banners.

The women of Ayodhya prepared auspicious articles — turmeric, kumkum, rice grains, and sacred thread. They sang traditional songs praising the Raghu dynasty and the glory of Shree Rama.

That night, no one in Ayodhya could sleep. Everyone eagerly awaited the dawn, when they would behold Shree Rama seated upon the royal throne, resplendent as a million suns.

But fate had willed otherwise — the divine play of the Lord was about to unfold. Though the citizens of Ayodhya knew not what was to come, the inscrutable will of Providence was already in motion.

In the midst of this universal joy, the hunchbacked maidservant Manthara beheld the celebrations with displeasure. Seeing the city adorned for Rama's coronation, her wicked heart burned with envy.

Manthara hastened to Queen Kaikeyi's chambers. She said — 'O foolish queen! While you sleep in ignorance, your rival Kausalya's son is about to seize the throne!'

Kaikeyi smiled and said — 'Rama is as dear to me as Bharata. His coronation brings me the same joy as if my own son were being crowned. Why do you speak such words of division?'

But Manthara was not deterred. With cunning words she said — 'O naive queen! Once Rama becomes king, you and Bharata will be reduced to servants. Kausalya will lord it over you!'

Again and again Manthara spoke poisonous words. Like a venomous serpent, she injected the poison of suspicion and jealousy into Kaikeyi's heart. The queen, who had been pure of heart, began to waver.

Manthara said — 'Remember, O queen, the two boons that King Dasharatha granted you on the battlefield! The time has come to demand them. Send Rama to the forest and place Bharata on the throne!'

Hearing these terrible words, Kaikeyi's heart was seized by the demon of delusion. The Maya of the Lord clouded her intellect — she who had loved Rama began to turn against Him.

Manthara continued her wicked counsel — 'If you do not act now, all will be lost. Dasharatha does everything Kausalya says. Once Rama is crowned, there will be no hope for Bharata.'

The unfortunate Kaikeyi listened to Manthara's words as a bird heeds the hunter's sweet whistle. The poison of ambition entered her veins — she resolved to go to the chamber of anger (Kop Bhavan).

This was the unfathomable divine play of the Lord — Rama had ordained this sequence of events to fulfill the purpose of His incarnation. No mortal can comprehend the mysterious ways of the Supreme.

Manthara said — 'Go now to the Kop Bhavan. Lie upon the bare floor, cast off your ornaments, and when the king comes, demand your two boons — exile for Rama and the throne for Bharata.'

Kaikeyi, now fully under the spell of delusion, discarded her ornaments and fine garments. She entered the Kop Bhavan and lay upon the bare floor, her face darkened with the shadow of wrath.

The chamber of anger was a gloomy and fearful place. Kaikeyi's beauty, which once rivalled the moon, was now obscured by the clouds of avarice and delusion.

All of this was the inscrutable working of divine will. The Lord, who dwells in every heart, had set these events in motion for the sake of the gods, the sages, and the world's ultimate welfare.

Manthara rejoiced in her wicked triumph. The foolish maidservant did not know that she was merely an instrument of fate — a puppet dancing to the tune of the Lord's cosmic drama.

Lord Shiva said to Parvati — 'Hear, O Bhavani! All that happens in the world occurs by the will of the Lord alone. Kaikeyi was not at fault — it was the Lord's divine plan unfolding.'

The saints and sages understand this truth — nothing in creation moves without the Lord's command. Rama desired exile so that He might slay the demons and establish dharma upon the earth.

Without the exile, the Lord's purpose of destroying Ravana and his demonic forces would not have been accomplished. Therefore, what appeared as misfortune was in truth the supreme mercy of Shree Rama.

The wise know that the Lord's ways are mysterious — what seems like sorrow is truly the seed of eternal bliss. The devotees of Shree Rama never lose faith, for they know that all is the Lord's divine play.

Thus did Manthara's wicked counsel take root in Kaikeyi's heart. The stage was set for the great drama that would shake the three worlds — yet out of this apparent calamity, infinite good would arise.

King Dasharatha, his heart brimming with joy, proceeded to Kaikeyi's chambers to share the happy news of Rama's coronation. But when he arrived, the chamber was dark and Kaikeyi lay upon the floor.

The king was shocked to see his beloved queen in such a state. He rushed to her side and asked — 'My dear, what ails you? Tell me and I shall remedy it at once. All the three worlds are within my power to give.'

Kaikeyi spoke with cold determination — 'O king! If you truly love me, grant me the two boons you promised me long ago upon the battlefield. Swear by Shree Rama that you will keep your word.'

The king, innocent of any suspicion, readily agreed. He said — 'My queen, there is nothing in this world I would not give you. Speak freely — your wish is my command. I swear upon Rama.'

Then Kaikeyi delivered her devastating demand — 'My first boon: let Bharata be crowned as king. My second boon: let Rama be exiled to the forest for fourteen years. These two promises I now claim.'

Hearing these words, King Dasharatha was struck as though by a thunderbolt. His body trembled, his vision grew dark, and he fell to the ground in a swoon — as if life itself had departed from him.

When the king regained consciousness, he cried out in anguish — 'What have you said, O cruel one? You ask me to banish the very light of my eyes! This is worse than death — it is the destruction of my soul!'

The king pleaded with folded hands — 'Ask me anything else, Kaikeyi! I will give you the kingdom, wealth, my very life — but do not ask me to send Rama away. I cannot bear to live without Him.'

But Kaikeyi was unmoved. She said — 'O king, the Raghu dynasty has never broken a promise. If you do not honour your word, the world will say Dasharatha was a liar. Keep your honour intact.'

Throughout that terrible night, the king writhed in agony. He wept and lamented — 'O Rama! O my son! What fate has befallen your father? Why did I ever make such a promise?'

The king said — 'O Kaikeyi, I beg of you — give up this terrible resolve! Rama is the life-breath of every creature in Ayodhya. Without Him, the city will become a desolate cremation ground.'

Kaikeyi replied with steely resolve — 'If you break your word, the entire Raghu dynasty will be dishonoured. A king's promise is his dharma — fulfil it or face eternal disgrace.'

The night passed in this manner — the king alternating between tears, pleas, anger, and despair. His heart was torn asunder by the conflict between his love for Rama and his commitment to truth.

When dawn came, the conches and drums that were to herald the coronation instead marked the beginning of the greatest tragedy Ayodhya had ever known. The city's joy was about to turn to ashes.

Sumantra, the king's charioteer and trusted minister, arrived at the palace. He found the king drenched in tears and Kaikeyi sitting with a face as hard as stone.

The king, with great difficulty, commanded Sumantra — 'Go... bring Rama to me.' He could say no more. His voice broke and fresh tears poured from his aged eyes.

Sumantra was confused and alarmed. He had expected to find preparations for a grand coronation — instead he found grief and desolation. With a heavy heart, he went to summon Shree Rama.

The great king of the Solar dynasty was reduced to helplessness by the iron grip of destiny. He who had conquered mighty demons on the battlefield was now vanquished by the force of his own word.

Shree Rama arrived at His father's palace, resplendent as the rising sun. He bowed at the feet of His father and mother Kaikeyi with perfect humility and grace.

Rama saw His father's stricken face and was moved with concern. But before Dasharatha could speak, Kaikeyi announced — 'The king has granted me two boons. Bharata shall be king, and you must go to the Dandaka forest for fourteen years.'

Hearing these words, Shree Rama's face did not betray even a flicker of distress. With the calm of a great ocean, He said — 'I am delighted to obey my father's command. The forest is as dear to me as the throne.'

The Lord of the universe, for whom the three worlds are but a plaything, accepted exile with a smile. This is the glory of the Supreme Being — He submitted to human dharma to set an example for all creation.

Shree Rama said — 'Mother Kaikeyi, you need not ask. Had my father merely hinted at his wish, I would have gone to the forest a hundred times over. A son's first duty is obedience to his parents.'

The king could bear it no longer. He cried out — 'Rama! Rama!' and fell unconscious. Shree Rama gently lifted His father and comforted Him with words of wisdom and love.

Rama said — 'Father, do not grieve. Fourteen years will pass like moments. I shall return and serve your lotus feet once more. Please give me your blessing and send me forth with joy.'

The Lord's perfect equanimity in the face of exile astonished all who beheld it. Neither the loss of a kingdom nor the prospect of hardship could disturb the peace that is Rama's very nature.

Shree Rama then went to Mother Kausalya to seek her blessing. The queen, hearing the terrible news, was devastated. She said — 'O Rama! How can I let you go to the wild forest?'

Mother Kausalya wept inconsolably. She said — 'What sin have I committed that fate should snatch my son from me? O Rama, take me with You — I cannot survive here without You.'

Shree Rama comforted His mother with profound wisdom — 'Mother, this body is mortal, but the soul is eternal. Do not grieve for that which is transient. Focus your mind upon God — all sorrow will vanish.'

With great difficulty, Mother Kausalya composed herself. She blessed Shree Rama with trembling hands and a broken voice — 'May all the gods protect You. May Your path be safe and Your return swift.'

The entire palace was engulfed in grief. The maids, attendants, and ministers all wept openly. Yet Shree Rama remained serene — a beacon of divine composure amid the storm of worldly sorrow.

Rama then proceeded to bid farewell to all His elders and well-wishers. To each one He spoke words of comfort and reassurance — truly, the Lord was consoling the very people who should have been consoling Him.

The news spread through Ayodhya like a wildfire of grief. The citizens who had been decorating their homes for a coronation now found their colourful garlands turned to garlands of tears.

Men and women, young and old, rushed towards the palace — 'Where is our Rama going? Who has done this terrible deed? Without Rama, Ayodhya is nothing but a cremation ground!'

The Lord looked upon the grief-stricken citizens with eyes full of compassion. Though He was the Supreme Being, He shed tears of love for His devoted people — such is the tender heart of Shree Rama.

Shree Rama then prepared to depart. He donned the garb of an ascetic — bark garments and matted hair. The Lord of infinite splendour, before whom the gods tremble, assumed the appearance of a humble forest-dweller.

राम के बिना अयोध्या सूनी हो जाएगी — जैसे जीवन-रेखा के बिना सब हीन हो जाता है। जैसे नेत्र बिना जगत अँधेरा होता है — वैसे राम बिना बेचारी नगरी होगी।

राम सबके प्राण-समान प्यारे हैं — धर्म के धुरंधर और नीति के अनूठे हैं। जो पिता के वचन का पालन इस प्रकार करे — ऐसा राम जैसा कोई दूसरा नहीं।

राम ने गुरु वशिष्ठ के चरणों में प्रणाम किया और प्रेम से चरण-कमल वंदना की। गुरु ने हर्षित होकर आशीर्वाद दिया। राम शुभ मार्ग पर चल दिए।

पिता के वचन का पालन — यही एक काम है, जगत में दूसरा कोई साज नहीं। राम धर्म की मूर्ति प्रकाशित हुए — वनवास के पथ पर मन अत्यन्त रसमय हो गया।

When Sita heard that Rama was going to the forest, She immediately resolved to accompany Her Lord. She said — 'Wherever You go, I shall follow. A wife's place is beside her husband — this is the eternal dharma.'

Shree Rama tried to dissuade Sita — 'The forest is full of hardships — wild beasts, thorny paths, extreme heat and cold. Stay here in comfort, my beloved, and serve our parents in my absence.'

Sita replied with firm devotion — 'O Lord of my life! Without You, this palace is a forest, and with You, the forest is a paradise. The shade of Your feet is my only shelter — what danger can touch me there?'

Sita said — 'O Rama, You speak of hardships, but what greater hardship is there than separation from You? The fire of separation would consume me in an instant — the dangers of the forest are nothing compared to that.'

Hearing Sita's resolute words, Shree Rama was pleased in His heart. The divine consort Sita, who is the very embodiment of devotion and wifely virtue, had spoken according to Her true nature.

Lakshmana, the devoted younger brother, also came forward. With folded hands he said — 'O Lord, I cannot remain here while You suffer in the forest. I am Your eternal servant — my life has no meaning without You.'

Shree Rama said — 'Lakshmana, who will take care of our aged parents if you also leave? Stay here and serve them — that is the highest dharma for you.'

Lakshmana replied with tears in his eyes — 'O brother, without You, every breath is a torment. My parents shall be cared for by Bharata and Shatrughna. But who will serve You in the wilderness if I do not come?'

Seeing the determination of both Sita and Lakshmana, Shree Rama consented with a gentle smile. The divine trio's journey to the forest was itself the beginning of the Lord's great cosmic mission.

Shree Rama, accompanied by Sita and Lakshmana, prepared to leave Ayodhya. The charioteer Sumantra readied the royal chariot with trembling hands, his eyes blinded by tears.

The citizens of Ayodhya lined the streets, weeping and wailing. They cried — 'Take us with You, O Rama! We cannot live here without You! Where You go, we shall follow!'

The whole of Ayodhya surged forward to follow the chariot. Men and women of all ages ran alongside, their hands outstretched — 'O Rama, do not leave us! O compassionate Lord, have mercy!'

The scene was heartrending beyond description. Even the trees seemed to droop in sorrow, the rivers ceased to flow, and the birds fell silent. All of creation mourned the departure of its Lord.

Shree Rama consoled the citizens with His infinite compassion — 'Dear people, do not grieve. Return to your homes and look after your families. I shall return after fourteen years — this is my solemn promise.'

But the people would not be consoled. They said — 'O Rama, fourteen years without You is an eternity! Our lives are meaningless without the sight of Your beautiful face!'

The chariot moved forward slowly, as though the horses themselves were reluctant to carry their Lord away from His beloved city. Sumantra drove with tears streaming down his face.

At the banks of the Tamasa river, Rama halted for the night. The citizens of Ayodhya, exhausted from following, fell asleep. In the darkness before dawn, the Lord quietly departed so as not to cause them further pain.

When the citizens awoke and found Rama gone, their anguish was boundless. They wept and cursed their fate — those who had followed Him found themselves abandoned by their beloved Lord.

Shree Rama arrived at Shringaverapur, the settlement of Guha, the king of the Nishada tribe. Guha, seeing the Lord, was overwhelmed with devotion and love — he fell at Rama's feet with tears of joy.

Guha served Shree Rama with the utmost devotion, offering roots, fruits, and a bed of soft leaves. That night, Lakshmana stood guard while Sita and Rama rested — the devoted brother would not sleep while his Lord lay upon the ground.

राम के वनगमन का समय सुन्दर और मंगलमय था — देव और मुनि सब मंगल गाने लगे। जगत में जय-जय राम सुनाई दिया — देवताओं के दुन्दुभि बजते रहे।

राम, लक्ष्मण और सीता रथ पर चढ़ गए — सुमन्त्र सब सामग्री लेकर तैयार हुए। वनगमन का प्रस्थान हो गया — सम्पूर्ण जगत राम के गुणों की गाथा गाने लगा।

After Shree Rama departed, the city of Ayodhya was plunged into an abyss of grief. The streets that had been decorated for a coronation now bore the look of desolation and despair.

King Dasharatha, inconsolable and broken, lay upon his bed calling out — 'Rama! Rama! O my son!' He could neither eat, nor drink, nor take any interest in the affairs of the kingdom.

Mother Kausalya sat in silent grief, her eyes emptied of tears. The other queens and the women of the palace surrounded her, weeping together — a chorus of sorrow that echoed through the empty halls.

The citizens of Ayodhya gathered in the streets and markets, but there was no business, no celebration, no laughter. Every conversation began and ended with Rama — 'When will our Lord return?'

The children asked their mothers — 'Where has Rama gone? When will He come back to play with us?' The mothers had no answer — they could only embrace their children and weep in silence.

Even the animals of Ayodhya sensed the loss. The cows refused to eat, the horses stood with bowed heads, and the elephants trumpeted mournfully. All living beings mourned the absence of their Lord.

The glory of Ayodhya, which once rivalled heaven itself, was now dimmed. Without Rama, the city was like a body without a soul, a sky without the moon, a garden without flowers.

The ministers and counsellors tried to console the king, but Dasharatha would not be comforted. He said — 'I have committed the greatest sin — I have banished my own son, the protector of the world.'

Night fell upon Ayodhya, but no one slept. The darkness seemed thicker and more oppressive than ever before. Lamps flickered dimly, as if they too mourned the departure of the Light of the Raghu dynasty.

Guru Vashishtha came to the king and spoke words of wisdom — 'O king, do not surrender to despair. Shree Rama is the Supreme Lord — He will return in glory. Have faith in the divine plan.'

But the king's heart was shattered beyond repair. He murmured — 'Rama... Rama...' with every breath. The name of his beloved son was the only word that remained on his lips.

Mother Sumitra, wise among the queens, counselled Kausalya — 'Sister, Rama is no ordinary prince. He is the Supreme Lord incarnate. His exile is not a tragedy — it is the fulfilment of His divine mission.'

Mother Kausalya found some solace in Sumitra's words. But the fire of separation continued to burn in her heart — a mother's love knows no philosophy that can quench its flames.

The people of Ayodhya cursed Kaikeyi and Manthara. They said — 'This hunchbacked maidservant and this deluded queen have destroyed our happiness! May they reap the fruit of their wickedness!'

Yet the wise among them understood that this was the Lord's divine play. They said — 'Do not blame Kaikeyi. This was destined — the Lord Himself ordained this sequence of events for the welfare of the world.'

Days passed in this manner — Ayodhya sunk in the ocean of grief. The city that had been the envy of Indra's heaven was now indistinguishable from a place of mourning.

The flowers in the gardens withered, the fountains ceased to play, and even the Sarayu river seemed to flow more slowly — as if reluctant to leave the city where Rama once walked.

Thus Ayodhya grieved for the departure of Shree Rama — a grief that shook the very foundations of heaven and earth. The three worlds mourned together, for the Lord of all creation had gone to the wilderness.

राम ने वनवास सुहावन किया — सीता-लक्ष्मण के साथ मन को शुद्ध करने वाला। अयोध्या नित्य भोर को विलाप करती है — राम बिना घर-घर में और जगत के कोने-कोने में शोक है।

अयोध्या में वियोग की व्यथा है — राम बिना कोई सुखी नहीं। नगरवासी जीवन की रात में डूबे हैं, राम-राम रटते हुए अनुताप करते हैं।

King Dasharatha lay on his deathbed, his life-force slowly ebbing away. Separated from Rama, the great king of the Solar dynasty had lost the will to live.

In his final hours, the king recalled a terrible incident from his youth — when as a prince, he had accidentally killed the blind sage Shravan Kumar's son with an arrow aimed by sound alone.

The blind parents of Shravan Kumar had cursed the young prince — 'Just as we are dying from the grief of losing our son, so shall you die from the pain of separation from your own son.'

The king now understood — this was the fruit of that ancient curse coming to fruition. With trembling lips he said — 'The curse of the sage has finally descended upon me. O Rama, forgive your wretched father.'

Dasharatha said — 'O Kausalya, forgive me. I have failed you and our son. My tongue, which uttered the words of exile, deserves to be cut out. My eyes, which shall never again see Rama, are worthless.'

Mother Kausalya, despite her own grief, tried to comfort the dying king. She said — 'O great king, do not blame yourself. This was the working of destiny — no mortal can escape the decrees of fate.'

As midnight approached, the king's breathing grew laboured. He called out one final time — 'Rama... Rama... Rama...' The holy name of the Lord was the last word upon his lips.

With the name of Shree Rama on his tongue and the image of his beloved son in his heart, King Dasharatha departed from this world. The great monarch who had ruled over heaven and earth was no more.

The moment of Dasharatha's death shook the three worlds. The gods in heaven wept, the earth trembled, and a pall of darkness descended upon Ayodhya — the sun of the Solar dynasty had set forever.

Mother Kausalya cried out — 'O my king! You have gone where I cannot follow! Without you and without Rama, what purpose does my life serve?' The queens fell upon the body of the king and wept without restraint.

Guru Vashishtha, though himself grief-stricken, maintained his composure. He said — 'The king has attained the supreme abode. He died with Rama's name upon his lips — there can be no greater blessing.'

The last rites were performed with full Vedic honours befitting the great emperor of the Raghu dynasty. The sacred fire consumed the mortal remains, but the glory of Dasharatha would endure forever.

The news of the king's death was sent to Bharata, who was staying at his maternal uncle's home in Kekaya. Messengers rode with all haste — their faces betraying the terrible tidings they carried.

Ayodhya, now bereft of both its king and its crown prince, was like a ship without a rudder in a stormy sea. The ministers and Guru Vashishtha jointly managed the affairs of the kingdom.

Lord Shiva said to Parvati — 'O Girija, King Dasharatha's devotion to truth was supreme. He sacrificed his life rather than break his word — this is the highest dharma, praised by all the scriptures.'

The death of Dasharatha was both a human tragedy and a divine necessity. Through his sacrifice, the Lord's mission would advance — Rama would remain in exile and fulfil His destiny of destroying the demons.

Those who die with the name of Shree Rama upon their lips are eternally blessed. King Dasharatha, by this single act, attained a destination that even great yogis strive for through countless lifetimes.

The glory of King Dasharatha will endure as long as the story of the Ramayan is told. He who fathered the Supreme Lord Himself and died chanting His holy name — such a father is worthy of the highest worship.

In the kingdom of Kekaya, Bharat had been troubled by ominous dreams for several nights. His heart was restless — a deep unease had settled upon his spirit.

When the messengers arrived from Ayodhya, Bharat sensed that something terrible had occurred. He immediately set out for Ayodhya with Shatrughna, travelling day and night without rest.

As they approached Ayodhya, Bharat noticed that the city looked desolate and lifeless. The markets were empty, the streets deserted, and a pall of silence hung over everything.

Bharat entered the palace and found his mother Kaikeyi. She greeted him and began to recount all that had transpired — the two boons, Rama's exile, and the king's death.

When Bharat heard that Rama had been sent to the forest because of his mother's demands, he was struck with unimaginable horror. He cried — 'Mother! What have you done? You have destroyed everything!'

Bharat said — 'You offered me a throne? I would rather have my tongue cut out than sit upon a throne purchased by my brother's exile! Rama is my lord, my life, my everything!'

Bharat's love for Shree Rama was beyond all comparison. He fell to the ground and wept — 'O Rama! O elder brother! Where are You? Your Bharat cannot live without You!'

Shatrughna, burning with righteous anger, seized Manthara. He was about to punish her when Bharat restrained him — 'Brother, violence will solve nothing. The real culprit is fate — this is the Lord's will.'

Bharat then learned of his father's death. The double blow — Rama's exile and Dasharatha's death — shattered him completely. He fell unconscious, overwhelmed by grief beyond all measure.

When Bharat regained consciousness, he went to Guru Vashishtha. He said — 'Gurudev, I will never accept this throne. I shall go to the forest and bring Rama back. He alone is the rightful king.'

Guru Vashishtha was deeply moved by Bharat's devotion. He said — 'O prince, your love for Rama is the purest I have ever witnessed. But first, let us perform the final rites for your father.'

Bharat performed the funeral rites of King Dasharatha with utmost devotion and reverence. Every ritual was conducted according to the Vedic scriptures, with the entire kingdom mourning alongside.

After the period of mourning, Bharat addressed the assembly of citizens and ministers — 'I shall go to Chitrakoot where Rama resides and bring Him back. The throne belongs to Him and to no one else.'

The citizens of Ayodhya were moved to tears by Bharat's selfless devotion. They said — 'Blessed is Bharat! He alone is worthy of being Rama's brother. Let us all go with him!'

Preparations began for the great journey to Chitrakoot. The entire city mobilized — ministers, brahmins, soldiers, women, children, and even the aged. All of Ayodhya wanted to see Rama.

Bharat set out at the head of a vast procession. His mother Kaikeyi, now deeply repentant, also joined the journey — hoping to seek Rama's forgiveness for the terrible wrong she had done.

As the procession moved through the forest, the citizens' anticipation grew with every step. 'Soon we shall see our beloved Rama!' they said. 'Soon this long nightmare will end!'

Bharat's devotion to Shree Rama surpassed even the devotion of the greatest saints. He who refused a kingdom that was freely offered — who in the three worlds can equal such selfless love?

भरत बहुत प्रकार से व्याकुल होकर विलाप किए — राम-वियोग की ताप हृदय में जप रही है। राम के दर्शन बिना चैन नहीं — जीवन की रात अन्धकार के वचन।

अयोध्या की सेना सब तैयार हो गई — चित्रकूट चलने को राजी है। भरत के साथ माताएँ और गुरुवर चले — राम-दर्शन के लिए मन उजियाला हो गया।

The great procession from Ayodhya wound its way through forests and across rivers, heading towards Chitrakoot. At the head rode Bharat, his heart burning with only one desire — to see Rama.

Along the way, the procession encountered the Nishada king Guha. Guha, seeing the vast army, was initially alarmed — he feared that Bharat had come to harm Shree Rama.

Guha rallied his tribesmen and prepared to defend the river crossing. He said — 'If Bharat has come with evil intentions towards Rama, we shall fight to the last man to protect our Lord.'

But when Guha beheld Bharat's grief-stricken face and heard his devotion to Rama, all suspicion melted away. He fell at Bharat's feet — 'Forgive me, O prince! Your love for Rama is divine!'

Guha hosted the entire procession and ferried them across the Ganga. He personally guided Bharat towards Chitrakoot, pointing out the places where Shree Rama had rested during His journey.

As they drew closer to Chitrakoot, the landscape transformed. The air grew pure and fragrant, the birds sang sweetly, and the very atmosphere was saturated with the divine presence of Shree Rama.

The sages and ascetics of Chitrakoot noticed the approaching procession and went to inform Shree Rama. They said — 'O Lord, a mighty army approaches from Ayodhya, led by Prince Bharat.'

Lakshmana, seeing the dust raised by the approaching army, was alarmed. He said — 'O brother! This appears to be a hostile force! Perhaps Bharat has come to secure his throne by eliminating us!'

Shree Rama smiled gently and said — 'O Lakshmana, how can you doubt Bharat? He loves Me more than his own life. He has surely come to take Me back to Ayodhya.'

The Lord's words proved true — as the procession came into view, Bharat could be seen running ahead of all, his arms outstretched, tears streaming down his face, crying — 'Rama! Rama!'

The forest of Chitrakoot, sanctified by Rama's presence, welcomed the citizens of Ayodhya. The trees seemed to bow in greeting, and the peacocks danced in celebration.

Bharat, upon sighting Shree Rama from afar, threw himself upon the ground in full prostration. He crawled forward on his hands and knees, too overcome with emotion to stand.

The citizens of Ayodhya, seeing Rama at last, broke into a spontaneous hymn of joy and lamentation intermingled — 'O Rama! O our Lord! We have found You at last! Come back to us!'

The sages of Chitrakoot witnessed this extraordinary spectacle with wonder. They said — 'We have performed austerities for countless lifetimes, yet we have never seen devotion as pure as this.'

Mother Kausalya, Mother Sumitra, and the other queens rushed towards Rama. The joyful reunion was tinged with sorrow — for they could see their beloved prince in the garb of an ascetic.

Even Mother Kaikeyi came forward with bowed head and tear-filled eyes. The weight of her terrible deed pressed upon her like a mountain. She longed for Rama's forgiveness above all else.

The sage Bharadwaja, who had hosted the procession, said to all — 'Behold the glory of the Raghu dynasty! The love between these brothers is the very ideal that the world should follow.'

All of Chitrakoot was transformed by the presence of the royal family. Gods showered flowers from heaven, and celestial music filled the air — as though the universe itself was reenacting the golden age.

The next morning, Bharat, with folded hands and eyes red from weeping, approached Shree Rama. He said — 'O Lord, I beg of You — return to Ayodhya and ascend the throne. The kingdom belongs to You.'

Bharat fell at Rama's feet and clasped them tightly — 'O brother, the throne was never mine to accept. I would rather die than sit where You should be seated. Come back and rule — the people need You.'

Shree Rama lifted Bharat and embraced him with infinite love. The Lord said — 'Dear brother, you are the very embodiment of dharma and devotion. But I must fulfil my father's word.'

Rama said — 'Our father gave his word, and the Raghu dynasty never breaks its promise. I must complete fourteen years of exile. Return to Ayodhya and rule wisely — you are more than capable.'

Bharat wept and said — 'How can I sit on the throne while You roam the forests? The people will say — Bharat enjoys the kingdom while Rama suffers. This shame I cannot bear!'

The great assembly — sages, citizens, ministers, queens — all watched in awe as the two brothers debated. Neither would yield — each insisting that the other deserved the throne more.

Guru Vashishtha intervened and addressed the assembly — 'This is a remarkable sight. Most brothers fight for the throne — here, each brother refuses it in favour of the other. This is the glory of the Raghu dynasty.'

After much deliberation, a divine compromise was reached. Shree Rama removed His sacred wooden sandals (padukas) and gave them to Bharat — 'Place these upon the throne. Rule Ayodhya as their regent.'

Bharat received the padukas with the reverence due to the Lord Himself. He placed them upon his head and wept — 'I shall place these upon the throne and govern only as their servant.'

Bharat vowed — 'I shall not enter the palace. I shall live in Nandigram, outside Ayodhya, dressed as an ascetic. I shall place Your padukas upon the throne and administer the kingdom in Your name.'

Bharat said — 'If after fourteen years You do not return, I shall enter the fire and end my life. This is my solemn vow — the world shall bear witness to Bharat's devotion.'

Shree Rama was deeply moved by Bharat's devotion. He embraced His brother once more and said — 'Dear Bharat, I shall return. Do not grieve — fourteen years shall pass swiftly.'

The entire assembly wept at this sublime exchange of love and sacrifice. The sages declared — 'In all the three worlds, across all the ages, there has never been a reunion as glorious as this.'

The gods rained flowers from heaven, celestial drums sounded, and apsaras danced in joy. The reunion at Chitrakoot had become a sacred event that would be celebrated for all eternity.

Shree Rama then bid farewell to all — His mothers, ministers, citizens, and beloved Bharat. Each farewell was accompanied by tears, blessings, and the Lord's gentle words of reassurance.

The procession from Ayodhya reluctantly began its return journey. The citizens looked back again and again, their eyes fixed upon Rama until His figure disappeared behind the trees of Chitrakoot.

Bharat walked with the sacred padukas held reverently upon his head. His eyes were closed, his lips murmured 'Rama... Rama...' — he was a picture of the supreme devotee, an ideal for all humanity.

Lord Shiva said — 'O Parvati, the love between Rama and Bharat is the highest example of fraternal devotion in all creation. Those who hear this account with faith attain the supreme abode.'

राम ने कहा — भरत! सुनो तात, जब चौदह वर्ष बीत जाएँ — तब लौटकर अयोध्या आऊँगा। सत्य-वचन पालने में कोई संदेह नहीं।

राम के वचन सुनकर भरत ने अपने को सम्भाला — प्रेम में मग्न नेत्रों में जल भर आया। राम-मिलन का अनुपम सुख पाया — फिर भी वियोग का दुःख छाया।

भरत ने राम से विदा ली — पादुका लेकर मुख पर प्रेम-धन है। लक्ष्मण-सीता-राम का आशीर्वाद पाया — भरत की सेना अयोध्या की ओर चली।

भरत राम के चरण-पादुका-धारी हैं — नंदिग्राम में रहने की तैयारी की। राम बिना राजसिंहासन नहीं — पादुका को सिर पर लगाया।

Bharat returned to the outskirts of Ayodhya and established his residence at Nandigram. True to his vow, he refused to enter the city and lived the life of an ascetic, wearing bark garments.

He placed Shree Rama's sacred sandals upon the royal throne of Ayodhya. Every day he worshipped them with flowers, incense, and sacred mantras — governing the kingdom as the sandals' humble servant.

Every decision of state was taken in the name of Shree Rama's padukas. Bharat would prostrate before them and say — 'O Lord's sacred sandals, guide me in ruling justly.'

The kingdom flourished under Bharat's selfless regency. The rains came on time, the harvests were abundant, and the people lived in peace — for the power of Shree Rama's padukas protected all.

Bharat counted every day of the exile with a twig. Each sunrise brought him one day closer to Rama's return — and each sunset reminded him that another day had passed without his Lord.

The citizen of Ayodhya marvelled at Bharat's devotion. They said — 'Blessed is Bharat, who rules a kingdom without enjoying even a moment of its comforts. His austerity surpasses that of the greatest yogis.'

Mother Kaikeyi, now deeply repentant, spent her days in prayer and penance. She realized the enormity of her mistake and prayed to Shree Rama for forgiveness with a contrite heart.

Guru Vashishtha guided Bharat in the administration of the kingdom. He said — 'O prince, your devotion is exemplary. Shree Rama will surely return — maintain your faith and courage.'

The fame of Bharat's selfless devotion spread to all the three worlds. The gods, sages, and celestial beings all praised his unprecedented sacrifice — 'There is no devotee like Bharat in all creation.'

Fourteen years — that is four thousand nine hundred and ten days — each one spent in longing for Shree Rama. Bharat's love knew neither diminishment nor fatigue — it only grew stronger with each passing day.

Lord Shiva said — 'O Parvati! Bharat's devotion is the very benchmark by which all devotion is measured. Even I, Shankara, am humbled by his selfless love for Shree Rama.'

The paduka pooja of Bharat is a teaching for all humanity — that true devotion means complete surrender of ego, desire, and worldly ambition. He who serves the Lord's symbol serves the Lord Himself.

Meanwhile, Shree Rama, along with Sita and Lakshmana, proceeded deeper into the forest. Their journey would take them to Chitrakoot, Panchavati, and eventually to the events that would reshape the world.

The Ayodhya Kand teaches us that the greatest virtue is obedience to one's parents, devotion to one's family, and unwavering adherence to truth — even when the cost is unbearable.

Thus ends the blessed second staircase (Sopaan) of the Shree Ramcharitmanas — the destroyer of all the sins and impurities of the Kali Age — known as the Ayodhya Kand. May Shree Rama bestow His grace upon all.
