📖 Aranya Kand Shree Ramcharitmanas by Goswami Tulsidas — Panchavati, Shurpanakha, Sita's Abduction, Jatayu & Shabari's Devotion

Shree Rama, along with Sita and Lakshmana, arrived at the hermitage of the great sage Atri. Beholding the Lord's divine form, Sage Atri was overwhelmed with joy and devotion — his eyes filled with tears of bliss.

Sage Atri reverently washed the lotus feet of Shree Rama and offered worship. He seated the Lord with great affection, as though Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva themselves had graced his humble abode.

Sage Atri praised Shree Rama with folded hands, saying — 'O Lord, You are the Supreme Being who has taken human form for the sake of the gods and sages. Your divine play (Leela) enchants the entire creation.'

The great sage spoke with deep devotion — 'O Rama, You are the remover of all worldly sorrows. The dust of Your lotus feet purifies the three worlds. I am blessed beyond measure to behold You today.'

Sage Atri offered the choicest forest fruits and roots to Shree Rama, Sita, and Lakshmana. The Lord graciously partook of them, delighting the sage's heart with His gentle acceptance.

Devi Anasuya, the devoted wife of Sage Atri and a paragon of Pativrata dharma, called Sita to her side. With great love and maternal affection, she instructed Sita in the sacred duties and glory of a devoted wife.

Devi Anasuya lovingly gave Sita divine garments, ornaments, and cosmetics that would never fade or diminish. Sita adorned herself with these celestial gifts and shone with even greater radiance.

Thus Shree Rama, Sita, and Lakshmana spent a blessed night at the ashram of Sage Atri. In the morning, taking leave with respectful salutations, the Lord proceeded further into the forest.

Shree Rama, the ocean of compassion, then entered the vast Dandakaranya forest. This ancient forest was the abode of many sages who performed rigorous austerities for the welfare of the world.

Seeing the rishis (sages) living in the forest, Shree Rama was deeply moved. The sages had endured terrible atrocities at the hands of the demons, yet they continued their penances with unwavering faith in the Lord.

The sages approached Shree Rama with folded hands and tearful eyes, saying — 'O Lord of the Raghus, the demons torment us day and night. They defile our sacred fire-rituals and devour our offerings.'

The sages continued their plea — 'O Protector of the righteous, we have no refuge other than You. The wicked demons, drunk with power, destroy our hermitages and scatter the bones of holy men.'

Hearing the anguished words of the sages, Shree Rama was filled with righteous anger. He firmly resolved — 'I shall rid this earth of all evil demons and make it safe for the sages to worship in peace.'

Shree Rama reassured the sages with His divine promise — 'Fear not, O holy ones. I shall destroy all the demons who trouble you. This is the very purpose for which I have incarnated upon this earth.'

The sages were overjoyed to hear the Lord's promise. They showered blessings upon Shree Rama, Sita, and Lakshmana, and offered them every hospitality with hearts brimming with devotion and gratitude.

Thus Shree Rama journeyed through the Dandakaranya forest, visiting the ashrams of countless sages. Wherever He went, the Lord brought hope, protection, and the assurance of divine justice to the persecuted holy men.

Shree Rama, Sita, and Lakshmana arrived at Panchavati on the banks of the sacred Godavari river. The Lord chose this beautiful and serene spot to establish their forest dwelling.

Lakshmana, the devoted younger brother, built a beautiful leaf-hut (parnakuti) with great love and skill. It was adorned with fragrant flowers and soft leaves — a worthy abode for the Lord of the universe.

Shree Rama was pleased to see Lakshmana's devotion manifested in the beautiful hermitage. The Lord, along with Sita, began to reside there happily, sanctifying the Panchavati grove with His divine presence.

One day Lakshmana humbly approached Shree Rama and said — 'O Lord, please bestow upon me the knowledge of the Self. Teach me to distinguish between the real and the unreal, between bondage and liberation.'

Shree Rama, the Supreme Teacher, lovingly instructed Lakshmana on the nature of Maya (illusion), the Self (Atman), and devotion (Bhakti). He explained how only through unwavering love for God can one cross the ocean of worldly existence.

The Lord continued His sublime discourse — 'O Lakshmana, this body, wealth, home, and relations — all are products of Maya. Only devotion to God is true and eternal. The wise abandon attachment and seek refuge in the Lord alone.'

One day, the Lord was seated in blissful repose with Lakshmana and Sita by His side. Shree Rama, the treasure-house of all knowledge and renunciation, was narrating sacred stories in His melodious divine voice.

In this manner, the Lord dwelt happily in the forest, the two brothers playing together in their enchanting divine forms. One day, a demoness named Surpanakha — the sister of Lanka's lord Ravana — arrived at Panchavati.

Surpanakha, Ravana's sister, was wicked at heart, as terrible as a serpent. She came to Panchavati one day and upon seeing Shree Rama, became utterly bewitched and agitated with desire.

Seeing Shree Rama, she was consumed with passion and jealousy. She adorned her own form in many alluring ways, transforming herself into a supremely beautiful woman, and approached Shree Rama with pleasure.

She said — 'O Lord, hear me! My name is Surpanakha, I am Ravana's sister. Lanka, the land of all demons, is my home. I am a beautiful and delicate widow — I seek a husband worthy as You.'

Hearing her words, Shree Rama smiled. Laughing within His heart, He spoke in gracious words — 'I am already married to Sita. But Lakshmana is unmarried, young, and handsome — go to him.'

Lakshmana said — 'Listen, dear lady! You are very beautiful, but I am merely a servant of my Lord. I worship the lotus feet of Shree Rama — if I were to marry, it would only cause delay in my service.'

Surpanakha went back to Shree Rama once again. She pleaded earnestly many times, but her anger only grew. Then she went to Lakshmana yet again — laughing, she spoke some bold words.

Surpanakha became furious and assumed a terrifying form. She rushed towards Sita to attack her, but Lakshmana swiftly cut off her nose and ears — thus punishing her demonic insolence.

Without her nose and ears, she became hideous and horrifying. Wailing in agony and grief, the wretched demoness fled to Lanka to complain to Khar and Dushan, narrating the entire terrible incident.

Khar and Dushan heard their sister's anguished tale and became furiously enraged. They marched out with a mighty four-fold army — elephants, horses, chariots, and foot soldiers thundering forth.

Seeing Shree Rama, the demons charged forward. They brought every manner of weapon and missile against Him. The Lord merely smiled, drew His bow, and began releasing arrows in a ceaseless stream.

With a single arrow, the Lord took the life of Khar. He slew Dushan and Trishira as well. Fourteen thousand demons were destroyed — each one felled by a single arrow of the Lord.

In one stroke, Shree Rama, the Hero of the Raghu dynasty, annihilated the entire army of Khar and Dushan. Gods, men, and sages all rejoiced, showering flowers and raising victory cries in the heavens.

The gods, gandharvas, kinnaras, and nagas — all rejoiced in Shree Rama's divine love. All the sages sang the glories of Rama — 'Victory to Shree Rama, the treasure-house of valour and might!'

Surpanakha was seized with terrible fear. Weeping, the sinful demoness fled to Lanka. Before Ravana she made a great outcry — 'They cut my nose and ears and assaulted me!'

Hearing Surpanakha's tale, Ravana's wrath blazed forth — the supremely arrogant demon-king. He went to the dwelling of Maricha and devised a plan to abduct Sita through treachery.

Maricha warned — 'Listen, O ten-headed one! Do not make enmity with Shree Rama — it would be sheer folly. Gods, men, sages, demons — Shree Rama, the Lord of the Raghus, is the death of them all.'

Maricha was deeply frightened in his heart, yet he spoke the truth to Ravana. He then reflected — 'Death comes to all one day; to die at the hands of Shree Rama is the greatest blessing one can receive.'

Then Maricha went and assumed the form of a golden deer — an exquisitely beautiful creature that came prancing into the forest near Panchavati. Sita beheld the deer and was captivated — she asked Rama to go and catch it for her.

Shree Rama instructed Lakshmana to guard Sita carefully. Then the Lord set out to pursue the beautiful deer. Maricha, in the body of the illusory deer, kept running further and further away with great cunning.

Shree Rama released one deadly arrow, and Maricha fell to the ground, defeated. Shedding his illusory deer-form, Maricha revealed his true demonic shape and cried out — 'O Sita! O Lakshmana!' — imitating Rama's voice.

The treacherous Maricha died from Shree Rama's arrow. When Sita heard what she thought was Rama's cry for help, she became overwhelmed with anxiety and distress.

Sita pleaded with Lakshmana — 'Go at once, brother! Save my beloved Lord!' Lakshmana replied — 'Listen, dear Mother! By the might of the Lord, no one can harm Him.'

Sita's harsh words weighed heavily on Lakshmana's heart. Out of love for the Lord's feet, he could say nothing more. After much deliberation, Lakshmana departed — drawing a protective line (Lakshman Rekha) around Sita and warning her not to cross it.

Lakshmana rushed to Shree Rama's side. Sita was left alone — such was the will of destiny. Then Ravana assumed a false disguise, appearing in the garb of a mendicant (sadhu), and approached with an evil laugh.

Ravana, disguised as an ascetic, cunningly deceived Sita. He seized her and flew away through the sky, carrying her along the aerial path.

Sita, in Ravana's clutches, wept piteously — 'O Raghuvira! O Lakshmana!' she cried again and again. Holding a blade of grass before her as a barrier, Queen Sita declared — 'Listen, Ravana! My Lord is the repository of all virtues.'

Hearing Sita's words, the ten-headed Ravana — the vile demon — continued flying onward. Sita cried out — 'O Rama! This wretched one is carrying me away! Without You, who can dispel the darkness of this world?'

Sita was weeping in utter helplessness when the wise vulture-king Jatayu heard her anguished cries. He flew up and blocked Ravana's path, resolving — 'I am a faithful servant of Shree Rama.'

Jatayu declared — 'Listen, Ravana! Heed my words as truth. Opposed to Rama, there is no welfare for you. Worship Shree Rama, abandon all wicked intentions — even now, your salvation is possible.'

Jatayu fought a fierce battle with Ravana. With his beak and talons, he tore and wounded the demon's body. Though aged, the noble bird fought with boundless courage — for Shree Rama's cause, he never accepted defeat.

The enraged Ravana drew his sword and severed Jatayu's wings. The vulture-king fell to the earth, overwhelmed with grief at being separated from Shree Rama.

Sita, separated from Rama, continued to weep in anguish as Ravana flew on in great haste. The noble vulture-king clung to life by invoking Rama's name — he would not surrender his life-breath without beholding the Lord.

Then Shree Rama arrived and found the fallen Jatayu. He spoke words of tender sweetness to the dying bird. 'Father! Father!' the Lord called out lovingly. Jatayu gazed upon Rama's beautiful form with his fading eyes.

The Lord placed Jatayu in His lap and embraced him to His heart. At the moment of death, Jatayu attained the lotus feet of Shree Rama — he received that supreme destination which even great yogis struggle to attain through lifetimes of effort.

By the grace of Shree Rama, the vulture-king attained the most sacred and supreme abode. The Lord bestowed upon Jatayu that exalted state which is beyond the reach even of great yogis — a testament to the power of selfless devotion.

Shree Rama wandered from forest to forest, searching everywhere, calling out — 'Sita! Sita!' — with no peace in His heart. The all-knowing Lord sought Sita through the wilderness, His sorrow beyond all description.

Kabandha was a massive demon — headless, with enormously long arms, supremely cruel. He seized both Rama and Lakshmana. The Lord then narrated the entire story of Jatayu to him.

Kabandha spoke — 'Listen, O Lord of the Raghus! Seek out Sugriva with a devoted heart. He will accomplish all Your purpose — he will have Sita searched for throughout the entire world.'

By the grace of Shree Rama, Kabandha shed his cursed body and regained his original beautiful celestial form. Paying homage at Rama's lotus feet, he departed to the heavens in a magnificent divine chariot.

Then the Lord arrived at Shabari's ashram. Shabari beheld Shree Rama — supremely beautiful, with lotus-eyes, mighty arms, a crown of matted locks, and a garland of forest flowers adorning His chest.

Shabari fell at the Lord's sacred feet. She was immersed in pure love — no words came from her lips. Her body thrilled with divine ecstasy, her heart overflowed with joy — the supremely blessed Shabari had found her Lord.

She offered the Lord the most delicious roots, tubers, and fruits. Shree Rama accepted them as sacred offering and partook of them. With love, the Lord ate the berries she had tasted first — Shabari's humble dwelling was sanctified forever.

The Lord spoke to Shabari of the Navadha Bhakti — the nine forms of devotion. God, who is won by devotion alone, is ever the bestower of happiness to those in whose heart He abides.

The first form of devotion is the company of saints. The second is love for hearing the Lord's stories. The third is selfless service at the Guru's lotus feet. The fourth is singing the Lord's divine qualities without guile.

The fifth is chanting the Lord's holy name with firm faith, as illumined by the Vedas. The sixth is sense-control, noble character, detachment, and the performance of many virtuous deeds — ever devoted to the path of the righteous.

The seventh is to see the whole world pervaded by the Lord, regarding saints as even greater than God Himself. The eighth is contentment with whatever one receives, never seeing faults in others even in dreams.

The ninth is simplicity of heart, guilelessness towards all, firm faith in the Lord, and equanimity in both joy and sorrow. 'These nine forms of devotion I have told you — whoever possesses even one of them is supremely dear to Me.'

Having received the blessed darshan (vision) of Shree Rama, Shabari was filled with boundless joy. She ignited the fire of yoga within her body and departed to the eternal abode of Shree Hari — attaining the supreme destination.

Shree Rama then journeyed onward and arrived at the beautiful Pampa Sarovar (lake). The crystal-clear waters of this enchanting lake were adorned with blooming lotuses and many sacred shrines on its banks.

There, the divine sage Narad came to meet Shree Rama. Beholding the Lord, he was filled with immense joy and delight. With humble prayers, Narad Muni spoke to the Lord — hearing Rama's story brought supreme bliss.

Lord Shiva said — 'O Girija (Parvati), I have narrated this Rama Katha which cleanses the mind of all worldly delusion and impurity. In this age of Kali, there is no other spiritual means — by chanting the name of Rama, one attains the highest worship.'

Place the jewel-lamp of Shree Rama's holy name upon the threshold of your tongue. Goswami Tulsidas says — if you desire illumination both within and without, this is the only way.

O Uma (Parvati)! The glories of Shree Rama are profound and mysterious — scholars and sages find renunciation through them. Those who turn away from Hari and do not cultivate devotion fall prey to the delusion of this world.

The Ramcharitmanas — the sacred lake of Rama's divine deeds — is beautiful, bliss-giving, and fulfills all noble desires. It is the eternal treasure of ever-new auspiciousness and welfare — there is nothing comparable to the Rama Katha in all creation.

In this Kali Yuga, the Rama Katha in the company of saints is delightful and blissful in every way. One who takes refuge in the name of Rama — all their endeavours are brought to fruition by the Lord Himself.

Devotion is independent and the mine of all happiness — yet without the company of saints (Satsang), no creature can attain it. Without an abundance of merit, one does not encounter the saints. And it is Satsang alone that brings an end to the cycle of birth and death.

Thus the third staircase (Sopaan) of the Shree Ramcharitmanas — the destroyer of all the sins and impurities of the Kali age — known as Aranyakand, comes to its blessed conclusion.
