The story of Lord Rama тАФ the ideal son and king тАФ who kept his father's promise even when it meant 14 years in the forest.
Long ago in the beautiful golden city of Ayodhya, there lived a wise and beloved king named Dasharatha. He had four sons, and the eldest тАФ Rama тАФ was the most beloved of all. People said that just watching Rama walk through the streets made their hearts feel peaceful.
Rama was brave, gentle, truthful, and always fair. As a young prince, he travelled with the sage Vishwamitra through dangerous forests, defeating terrible demons who were troubling the peaceful sages. With great archery skill, Rama also broke the legendary bow of Lord Shiva тАФ the bow so heavy that no man had ever lifted it тАФ and thereby won the hand of the beautiful princess Sita in marriage. Rama and Sita loved each other deeply and sincerely.
One day, King Dasharatha called the whole kingdom together with wonderful news: Rama would be crowned the next king of Ayodhya! The entire city burst into celebration. Garlands filled the streets. Musicians played. Everyone was overjoyed.
But that very night, Rama's stepmother Kaikeyi went to the king's chamber. Long ago, Kaikeyi had saved Dasharatha's life in a battle, and the grateful king had promised her two wishes тАФ any two wishes she wanted. Now she called in those promises: she wanted her own son Bharata to be king instead of Rama, and she wanted Rama to be sent to the forest for fourteen years.
King Dasharatha wept all night. He was utterly heartbroken. But he had given his word.
In the morning, Rama was told everything. Not a single line of worry crossed his face. He smiled and said, "Father gave his word, and a son must honour his father's promise. I will go to the forest gladly."
Sita heard this and immediately said, "Where you go, I go. The forest with you is better than a palace without you."
And younger brother Lakshmana stood up firmly: "I will not live in comfort while my brother walks in the forest. I am going too."
The three of them walked into the great forest together, dressed simply, carrying only a bow and a water pot. For fourteen years they lived under open skies, eating fruits and roots, sleeping under trees, and protecting the sages who lived in those forests.
But one day, the demon king Ravana kidnapped Sita while Rama and Lakshmana were away. Rama's heart broke with grief тАФ but he did not give up. With the help of the monkey king Sugriva, the legendary Hanuman, and an army of animals of every kind, Rama fought the great war and rescued Sita from Lanka.
When exactly fourteen years had passed, Rama returned to Ayodhya. The people of the kingdom lit thousands of tiny oil lamps along every road, every rooftop, and every windowsill to welcome him home. The city blazed with warm golden light.
This celebration is still held every year today тАФ on the darkest night of autumn тАФ as Diwali, the Festival of Lights.
Rama went on to rule Ayodhya for many years with justice, kindness, and wisdom. His reign was so perfect that even today, when Indians imagine the ideal society, they call it "Ram Rajya" тАФ the Kingdom of Rama.
ЁЯМЯ Moral of the story
Always keep your promises, no matter how hard it may be.
