The Birth of Lord Ganesha

рдЧрдгреЗрд╢ рдЬреА рдХрд╛ рдЬрдиреНрдо

How Goddess Parvati created Ganesha and the story of how he got his magnificent elephant head.

High up on the snowy peaks of Mount Kailash, Goddess Parvati, the wife of Lord Shiva, spent her days in devotion and care. But Shiva was often away in deep meditation for months and years at a time, and Parvati sometimes felt the need of a protector тАФ someone she could trust completely.

One day, while preparing for her bath, Parvati had a beautiful idea. She took the sandalwood paste she used for her skin тАФ fragrant and golden тАФ and with her own hands she lovingly shaped it into the form of a little boy. She worked with care and imagination, giving him gentle eyes, strong shoulders, and a warm smile. When she breathed life into him, the boy opened his eyes and looked up at her.

"You are my son," Parvati said. Her heart was immediately full of love.

"And you are my mother," said the boy.

Parvati smiled and gave him a task. "Stand guard at the door while I bathe. Let no one in."

The boy nodded seriously. "No one shall pass, Mother."

Not long after, Lord Shiva returned home from his long meditation тАФ calm, powerful, his matted hair piled high, his trident resting on his shoulder. He walked toward his own home and was stopped at the door by a small, unfamiliar boy.

"You may not enter," said the boy firmly.

Shiva was surprised тАФ then amused тАФ then, as the boy continued to block the way, genuinely irritated. Who was this child who blocked the great lord of destruction? His attendants tried to push past and were repelled. Finally, in a moment of anger, Shiva struck with his divine power and the boy fell.

When Parvati came out and saw what had happened, she was overcome with grief. She wept and told Shiva тАФ this was her son, created from her own love, born of her own care.

Shiva's heart broke. He immediately asked his attendants to go north and return with the head of the first living being they found sleeping with its head pointing north. They returned with the head of a great elephant.

Shiva placed the elephant head on the boy's shoulders and breathed life back into him. The boy opened his eyes тАФ now wise and ancient in the way that elephants are, yet still warm with Parvati's love.

Shiva and Parvati embraced their son. Lord Brahma and all the gods arrived to bless the new child. His name was declared Ganesha тАФ the lord of all beings тАФ and it was proclaimed that he would be worshipped first, before any other god, before any new beginning.

And so it is, even today. Before you start anything тАФ a journey, a prayer, a new school year, a festival тАФ you first bow to Ganesha, the remover of obstacles, born from a mother's love and given new life by his father.

ЁЯМЯ Moral of the story

Every ending is a new beginning, and obedience comes from love.
