Dhruv and the Undying Star

рдзреНрд░реБрд╡ рддрд╛рд░рд╛

The story of young prince Dhruv, who meditated so sincerely that he became the eternal North Star.

Once upon a time, there was a little prince named Dhruv. He lived in a grand palace with his father, King Uttanapada. Dhruv had a stepmother named Suruchi, and one ordinary afternoon, while the king sat on his throne, little Dhruv ran up and climbed into his father's lap for a hug тАФ as he always did.

His stepmother Suruchi saw this and said coldly, "You may not sit on the king's lap. Only my son deserves that seat."

The king said nothing. Little Dhruv's eyes filled with tears. He ran to his own mother, Suniti, and buried his face in her lap.

"Why did she say that, Maa? Is it true?" he asked.

His mother held him gently and stroked his hair. "She is wrong, my dear. But no earthly crown can give you the place you deserve. Only Lord Vishnu can grant you an eternal place that no one can ever take from you. Go and seek His blessings."

Dhruv was only five years old. But his heart was full of firm courage. He said goodbye to his mother and walked alone into the deep forest to find Lord Vishnu.

In the forest, the wise sage Narada appeared before the determined little boy. He smiled gently and asked, "Where are you going, little one, all alone?"

"I am going to find Lord Vishnu," said Dhruv calmly.

Narada was deeply moved. He taught Dhruv a sacred mantra тАФ "Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya" тАФ and showed him a peaceful spot by a river to meditate. "Chant this with all your heart," Narada said.

Dhruv sat down cross-legged, closed his eyes, and began to chant. Days passed. Weeks passed. Months passed. Seasons changed around him. Dhruv did not move. He sat still through rain and blazing heat, through cold nights and hungry days. He chanted on and on.

After many long months, the entire universe trembled. The sky blazed with light, and Lord Vishnu Himself appeared before Dhruv with a gentle smile.

"Open your eyes, dear child," the Lord said softly.

Dhruv opened his eyes and was filled with such overwhelming joy that he forgot every word he knew. He could not speak a single word.

Vishnu touched Dhruv's cheek with His divine conch. Dhruv found his voice again. "Lord," he said with folded hands, "I no longer remember what I came for. May I always remember You тАФ that is all I ask."

The Lord smiled warmly. "Your devotion has earned you a place beyond all others тАФ beyond the sun, beyond the moon, beyond all the moving stars. You shall become the Dhruva Nakshatra, the fixed North Star, shining steadily forever, a guide for all who look to the sky."

And so it was. Even today, when you look up on a clear night and find the one star that never moves тАФ steady, bright, and patient тАФ you are looking at little Dhruv: the five-year-old boy whose faith was strong enough to light up the entire sky forever.
