Gateway of India
Mumbai, Maharashtra
Designed by architect George Wittet in the Indo-Saracenic style, the Gateway of India was built to commemorate the visit of King George V and Queen Mary in 1911. The grand arch blends elements of 16th-century Gujarati architecture with Roman triumphal arches. Ferries to Elephanta Island depart from the jetty adjacent to the Gateway, making it the perfect base for island excursions. The surrounding esplanade buzzes with street food vendors, balloon sellers, and the famed Taj Hotel afternoon tea. A stroll along Marine Drive can be combined with a Gateway visit for a classic Mumbai afternoon.
November to February (winter). Evenings for sunset over the Arabian Sea.
